Thanks for stopping in to take a look.

A couple of shots from yesterdays tourney. Shot with 70 - 200 @ ISO of 800, 1/250 @ 2.8. Sunlight through the gym windows negated the problem of poor gym lighting, but did add some shadows.

Comments with corrections welcome.

Warrior, I think you did a great job of capturing these matches. You have expressions on both wrestlers, and the pictures look sharp for ISO800. The one thing I am trying to do when you have that much of the body is to include all arms, legs.... Nice job.

Nice shots. As far as the comment about trying to include complete arms and legs, I try to do the same; however, then you don't see the facial expressions as well.

Also, I don't understand the comment about tying in ISO of 800 and sharpness, Maybe I'm missing something there.

MDJAK (other Mark)- iso 1600 usually softens the image due to noise. It's hard to get really good pop without popping the noise too. At least that is my experience.....

Warrior... nice shots of a hard sport to capture... getting pictures is relatively easy, but capturint the sport is another story.

Being a newbie to wrestling.... what is "folk style" wrestling.

Thanks for your comments. Maybe if cargo comes back by, he can explain further about the ISO800. I thought that would give me a better pic with less noise--but I am just getting started into this.

Croasdail--folk style is just one type of wrestling, and is the one used in high school competition. There are other forms, including but not limited to freestyle and greeco-roman.

[QUOTE=warrior6901]Thanks for your comments. Maybe if cargo comes back by, he can explain further about the ISO800. I thought that would give me a better pic with less noise--but I am just getting started into this.

I was complimenting you on the fact your pictures look sharp with ISO 800. My pictures don't. They show more noise the higher ISO I use. They require adjusting. I have attached a picture that I took. I think it would look better if the hands and feet were attached. I am working on this. When they are moving fast, I have a hard time paying attention to the make sure everything is included, and watch for a good picture. These pictures were at ISO 1600. One is adjusted to attempt to get rid of noise. Not sure where someone could miss the fact that noise effects the sharpness.

Thanks for the compliment. That is what I thought, but as stated...new at this.

Mind sharing what you did for noise reduction in your pic?

Thanks.

Croasdail

Warrior is right. Folkstyle has become the term used to refer to American High School and College wrestling rules and conventions. The other two mentioned are the two distinct international forms which are contested in the olympics and other international competitons.

I tried photographing the sport for the first time two weeks ago at our local HS. I got similar shutter speeds at 2.8, ISO 800. I found it was extremely difficult to get the action bursts from a desireable angle. Wrestlers can spin and change their position at any time, and there is no goal or base which allows you to anticipate the action. It seems to me that you have maybe a 60 degree or so (at most) angle where an acceptable shot could be made of any particular position or action, so you have maybe a 1 out of 6 chance of having been in that area at the particular moment that the action or move occured. This is not counting the fact that timing and focus have to be right.

Not easy.

Cargo,

What did you use for noise reduction?

Warrior!!

Looks like we were both busy this weekend. I like the shots you posted. I shot around 800 this weekend at the Wayne High school matches. Sat. was the Highschool... and Sun. was the Youth League.

I hope to learn from all yours and the others post!!

Noise reduction is something in your photo editing software that sharpens the image...

I would tell you how except I just learned that much a couple of days ago...havent learned how to actually do it yet...LOL

From what I can tell this is a tough sport to get good shot of and I dont know why?

I got a lot of nice shot this weekend but you have to be lucky and in the right place at the same time in this sport. Also, the Highschool and youth program has asked that NO flash be used so that really affects your shots. I was lucky with the high school. They set up a middle walkway for the coaches and score keepers and I was allowed to use it. I could get betwwen 2 matts and shoot bot matches there buy just turning. Lots of shots with me Laying on the matts and getting intersting angles. Standing or inthe stands really do not cut it and you do end up with a lot of "Butt" shots. The kids spin and move so fast that I use a 400 shutter speed and have been able to maintain a 2-2.2 AP. in this Gym. ISO has been at 800 with good results (My fear of post processing comes in here)

I have more problems with keeping my 50MM lens on focus. I use center point focus and it will grab someone in the stand at the wrong time. I also had to move to all manual. The black and then the red mats were throwing off the lighting badly in the AP or TP modes.

Now if I could learn how to post process I will be flying high!! lol Thanks all...

Mark and the rest... I am learning a lot from your shots and postings... thanks.

Dave

Hawk,

I have also found the black and then then the dark burgundy mats seriously multiply the lighting situation. I shoot in manual all the time and generally a dozen or so at each match in raw. This allows a little practice in that format.

Thanks for the comments.

Do any of you sell your pics? I do some HS basketball but never tried wrestling.
