After much soul searching :D I decided to buy a Lastolite Ezybox II soft box which I will power with 2 580EX II flashes on the same bracket.

Now I'm facing the challenge of picking which one will work best for my needs.

I will shoot at the following locations:

  • 60% of my shooting will be outdoors (e.g., a park)
  • 20% will be indoors at a client site (e.g., an office, a church, etc)
  • 20% will indoors in my own studio

The subject will be:

  • 60% a female model
  • 10% a couple
  • 10% a group of people
  • 20% a male model

I will mostly do portraits, fashion, glamour, and the occasional wedding. Often with paid models. In the future I might add more light modifiers and lights to the mix, but mostly for studio use.

Price differences between soft boxes are not a concern. Wind resistance, time to setup, portability, quality of light, etc, do. In general I'm more interested in the one that best meets my needs and provides me with versatility.

Thank you. I appreciate your votes and/or comments.

Not a strong consensus I'm afraid. Only two votes. :-|

Any particular reason for going with this brand?

Good reviews in terms of light quality and durability, as well as the availability of a double bracket to host two 580EX II. I'm not opposed to others, but I would strongly prefer a double bracket solution.

Well, you really have to think about how much ambient light you'll be shooting in outdoors. The larger the modifier, the more limited you'll be because of decreased flash output. What have you used to modify your 580EXII up til now and in what outdoor lighting have you used that modifier?

So far I have used umbrellas and studio lights indoors, and on-flash modifiers outside. So outdoors I have not really used any large light modifier yet.

I assume that the links were provided purely for ease-of-viewing by American members of the Forum. Hopefully, you will be aware of the rather large shipping charges B+H inflict for overseas orders - there are innumerable UK suppliers who ship to Ireland much cheaper, or you could stay local and ask info@barkerphotographic.ie (INVALID EMAIL) down in Co. Cork and then even avoid iniquitous bank currency exchange fol-di-rols. Not to mention Customs charges ;)

Example of "added costs" from B+H to UK (OK, I know it's not Ireland but UK VAT is lower).
Item costing US$ 53.00.
Shipping US$ 43.35.
VAT @20% US$19.27.
Disbursement US$17.85.
Security & Handling US$ 5.01.
Carrier SURCHARGE US$ 15.00
Total = US$ 153.48

I only mention it because not everyone is aware of the little extras which can add quite noticeably to the cost.
(PS It's a speedring)
(PPS No, I didn't order it!!!!)

Phil ǁ Kershaw Soho Reflex: 4¼" Ross Xpres, 6½" Aldis, Super XX/ABC Pyro in 24 DDS, HP3/Meritol Metol in RFH, Johnson 'Scales' brand flash powder. Kodak Duo Six-20/Verichrome Pan. Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!

Correct, but thank you for pointing out the issue.

I was thinking about another option. Go for the Ezybox II Square, Medium (23.75 x 23.75") for portability but also acquire a large shoot-through umbrella for groups and full body shots. Smart thinking or should I just grab a larger box?
