I had two ideas which are accomplish the same goal - let you share your pictures online without giving them a chance to realistically reuse it for other purposes.

Facebook - Instead of a small watermark start using a large text based watermark that gets displayed several times across the image - ie. FOR FACEBOOK USE ONLY - COPYRIGHT YOUR NAME. If somehow in the future Facebook decides to use your image for whatever they want they will have a little reminder from you.

Photo Contests that want to own your pictures upon entry - By submitting a picture to the contest you are granting them rights to that picture. If you modify your original picture and insert a watermark that makes it a new picture. Let them own a picture that is low-res and with a large watermark. Good luck selling image like that.

What do you think guys?

Should work for facebook. I doubt you are going to win any contest with a watermark.

I only entered a few contests but none of them stated that you cannot use watermarks in your images.

No, but if the whole purpose of the contest was to harvest images, would you pick a watermarked one to win?

Why the hell would you want to encourage bad behavior by entering these contests and legitimize their stupid rights grabbing ways?

Any of my freelance stuff that hasnt been paid for and has a high chance of getting "reused" gets a pretty gnarly watermark.

Nice!

At first I was going to say those could easily be cropped out but then I looked a little closer. Very nice! Your watermark is almost invisible if you don't look pretty close.

No, I never claimed to be outstanding in the field of photography. I said I was out standing in the field taking photos.

What do you think guys?

1) "If somehow in the future Facebook decides to use your image" should read "If you AGREE to Facebook's terms and conditions and therefore GRANT THEM PERMISSION to use your images". Big nasty watermarks on Facebook defeat the purpose of using the medium to a large degree.

2) Don't enter the competitions with unfair terms - that is a no brainer.

How about "use common sense" when using a website to share images which is OUT OF YOUR CONTROL due to you GRANTING THEM CONTROL and "don't enter stupid, unfair contests".

I am against the contests that want full rights to your pictures and prefer to enter those that use your images in relation to the contest. I entered a small contest this week that doesnt state anything about watermarks but does state that they will own all images submitted. I submitted my pictures with a watermark and there is another contestant that did the same.

Depends on a contest.

For example I entered NWF contest and submitted unwatermarked images because there is a chance I might win and the image will be printed in their magazine. The votes are not ready yet but one of my image did make it to the finals for People's Choice Award. I saw entries in that contest that had watermarks.

I entered an online contest this week and used watermarks. Rules didnt say anything about them but did say they will own the image. Let them own a modified copy of my image instead.

This doesn't jive with

If you are against a contest that takes ownership of your photo, why the **** would you enter a contest where they say they take ownership of the photo?

Watermarks be damned, if they own the photo, they can remove the watermark until their heart's content because it is their intellectual property to do with as they please.

Dammit people, stop entering these stupid contests.

Because I am not giving them my original image, I am giving them a low-res modified image that has a watermark. In the past I avoided contests that want to grab full rights to your image but now I am trying to see how using images with watermarks will play out.
