Selling a large ticket item $2k on ebay....

In terms of the fees, you think it is better? Does Ebay cap their closing fee at $100? No offense but there are too many lowballers on the message boards, not just here but on the FM board as well. Even with the fees, you are still ahead selling it on Ebay than on the message board....

Well, I was wrong. There was no cap. Ouch... Never mind....

Oops. There is a cap, is $250 based on the Ebay fee calculator.

Do you have gumtree in the States? No fees and I've sold a lot of stuff via them. You just have to arrange your own payment methods

USA has craigslist (quite similar to gumtree)

They both have their positives (no fees) and negatives (lots of scammers, trollers, lowballers)

1. If you get a lowball offer, no shame in rejecting it.

2. It's hard to do better on eBay now that they are charging 10% on everything. Fees get truly ridiculous with more expensive cameras and lenses, and a cap of $250 at least double what it should be. I have cut *way* back on eBay selling since this was implemented. I also find it funny how eBay is always trumpeting their free listings, but it is a bit of a PITA to locate their FVFs. They truly must believe their customers are stupid.

In addition to the final value fees on the auction itself, there are Paypal fees if you use the Paypal payment method. Between the two, figure about 15-20% of the final selling price gets subtracted in total transaction fees on eBay. It wasn't like this a few years ago, and like others, I have chosen to use alternative venues to sell my gear (this board being the best for Canon gear of course).

On the lowballers, I get those all the time from members here. With a board this size, it's inevitable that cheapskates will answer (you know who you are!). Just ignore them, or state clearly in your ad that the price is firm and that counteroffers will not be considered.

ebay had a no-fee offer if you opt for ebay gift voucher. I dont know if it is still on. It is obviously not as good as getting cash, but if you plan on buying something through ebay (may be adorama, buydig etc??) soon enough it is probably worth it (savings of about 10% - between ebay and paypal).

I don't get the lowballer thing. Either say your price is firm and ignore them or send quick replies. I'm much more annoyed at the "I'll take it" replies followed by the alleged buyer disappearing.

Ebay fees are high, but sometimes worth it. A little research is helpful if you want to maximize your dollars. In all honestly POTN seems the worst to me lately. I get more quality responses on FM, and have had more luck selling some stuff on ebay for higher net dollars after fees.

I agreed eBay fees are high but something like lens 55-250mm and Canon rebel T3, I did not got any offer here I then posted on eBay and it sold. I also listed on local craigslist and got sold sometime. Sometime potential buyer lives 100 miles away from me but on my way to work, I offered free delivery too, but you have to be careful when dealing with craigslist.

Craigslist avoids all fees but the risk of getting robbed.

eBay is a rip off if you're trying to recoup some money. As mentioned above, you're looking at 15-20% including PayPal fees taken from the final price.

Amazon is another site I go to, to sell my stuff. Free to sell but they also take a fee. They also let you know how much the fee will be if it sells at that price and how much you'll be getting. It also helps you recoup some of the shipping costs. Sometimes you'll make some money from shipping and sometimes you'll lose a few bucks depending on the weight of the item.

you could just lower your price...if it's not selling here or at fred miranda, you've probably over-valued it...

I've heard others say this, but I've never experienced it. When I sell an item, I will usually get 1 or 2 offers that are lower than my asking price and I just say no thanks. By day 2 just about everything I've ever sold here purchased by another member. I've probably bought/sold 20-30 items here over the years with very good results on either side of the transaction.

Don't forget that eBay and PayPal make it easy for the buyer to screw you over. If they decide to buy your lens, play with it for a few days, then file a dispute with both eBay and Payapal claiming there's a problem you failed to disclose, you will at the very least lose postage fees.

Hahaha...soon. I am in the process of changing my photography priority. Certain "lens" I won't need.
