you could just lower your price...if it's not selling here or at fred miranda, you've probably over-valued it...

Not exactly. I was watching an auction on the 70-200L f2.8 IS markII. :) It was sold for $2200. I don't expect the lens would be sold for over 2k on this message board or over at the FM site. Of course, after the closing and paypal fees, you are ended up with $1920.

In addition to the final value fees on the auction itself, there are Paypal fees if you use the Paypal payment method. Between the two, figure about 15-20% of the final selling price gets subtracted in total transaction fees on eBay.

Paypal = 2.9%
Final Value = 10%
Plus they now include Shipping in the FV fee, which is ridiculous, so there's another buck or two lost.

I'd say your 15% is close, but it's never going to be 20% unless you are paying lots of listing fees on $2 items.

Amazon charges 8% + 99 cent listing for Camera gear, but it's a little harder to sell there due to limited listing info and no pictures.

if all you get are lowball offers you are probably asking too much. free market. figure 10% goes to ebay.

Try craigslist first. I've sold numerous high value items through craigslist and I typically like to put a cap on what I sell on ebay at around $600 (although now even that sounds high).

With craigslist, I typically just setup the meeting at a mall food court or something where there's ton of people. So once the potential buyer checks the lens/camera out, they can confirm that it works as expected before they decide to buy it. Then cash for the item and everyone goes their own way. There's none of this "the package got lost" or "the camera doesn't work when I opened it" or worst of all a transaction reversal by Paypal.

It depends. I've listed a 18-55 STM lens, didn't really think it would get much interest here and it hasn't. Consumer level stuff is tough to sell here unless you're giving it away, prosumer and pro gear attracts much more interest.

(Edit - lens sold on eBay in about 4 hours for $15 more than I was asking here. As I said, not really surprised a kit lens gets little interest here - but it doesn't necessarily mean the item is overpriced.)
