I attended the World Superbike races at Laguna Seca this past weekend.I thought I'd share some pics from the event.

All photos were taken with Canon 7D and Sigma 120-300mm Sport w/Canon 1.4x III extender.C&C is always welcome.

The rest of the set is on my flickr if you care to take a look.

Robert -

Nice set. Love #5... rider's eyes through the turn horizontal. Nice work. A shame MotoGP dropped Laguna in 2014!

Question... how is the 7D? I need to step up to better capture action sports and am in between the 7D and 70D. My 60D auto focus seems to lack what I need for speed.

Thanks,

TJ

Thanks TJ.I'm also bummed that MotoGP won't be back at Laguna Seca next year.It was the tracks' most popular event.I hope they try to get them to come back in the future.

As far as the 7d is concerned,I pretty happy with it.I actually just picked it up used about a month ago.I usually shoot with a 5D mark III.But I got the 7D for more reach.

If your main reason to upgrade is for sports shooting the 7D is a tried and proven camera. As I'm sure many people will attest to.

pros:
The build quality is excellent.8 fps is very welcome.Initial focus acquisition is very quick.AF settings can be tweaked for different situations.I've only had the camera for a short time but AF seems pretty accurate.

cons:
Sensor is a little noisy. If you plan to shoot in daylight then it shouldn't be a problem.

I haven't used a 70D,so I can't comment on it.But seems to be a nice camera.Maybe slightly better all around camera.while the 7D is more suited for sports and wildlife.Even though the 7D is a few years old,it still holds up pretty well.

I was hoping the 7D mark II would be released soon, but it looks like that won't happen until next year.

I hope this helps.

Robert

Those are some great shots! I was there also, but I somehow left the batteries for my 7D at home in the charger, so no pics for me...lol! Like you guys I can't believe MotoGP is not returning in 2014, hopefully ALMS or whatever they're gonna call it next year, will still be on the calendar. Was your Sigma lens able to auto focus with the extender attached?

Hello romeokc10,

Yes,the Sigma autofocuses fine with the extender attached. The lens is f2.8,so even with a 1.4x extender, the lens has a maximum aperture of f4.The 7d can autofocus with lenses f5.6 and larger. The Sigma will also autofocus with a 2x teleconverter attached.

Hope this helps.

regards,

Robert
