why no flash? it's the best option to stopping the motion of a 5 year old running around...

This. I fiddled around for about a year with high ISOs, ultra-shallow depth of field and the like, and eventually bought myself a Speedlite and learned how to use it properly. It was the best photography equipment decision I've ever made.

+ 1. Even with fast primes I usually prefer the photos that I use some flash bounced diffused etc.

Exactly what I decided to do with the external flash. Even a cheapo flash will completely change the game. Now that I have radio flash triggers (cheapo's as well) I fully expect my game to get to a completely different level.

If you don't mind me asking what triggers do you use? right now I pretty much use 2 580 Ex2s to fire as a slave but I would love to get it off camera. ( sorry to hijack the thread )

Yes but you need to use the pop up flash for it to work. With my 5D2 (I use it more ) I mount a 580ex2 to trigger my other flash.

I sent you a PM Tommy.

Thank you

For decent flash effects, I have set my 550EX to completely vertical and scotch taped a 3x5 card to the extended diffuser panel. Works great when wall and ceilings are too far for bounce.

Dedicated APS-c shooter. Gripped 60D, 60 2.8, 10-22, 15-85, Σ70-200 OS and a big white something or other! Plus a 5D w/28-75.

Your camera is capable of the no-cost solution of shooting at ISO 6400. For best results, you will have to shoot raw, with some +EC, and spend at least a few minutes with DPP or LR, processing the images. With good lighting, your ISO 6400 shots can equal the in-camera jpg shots at 1600.

Here is a quick 90-second edit on a raw file. 60D, 15-85, f/8, 1/50, +1EC, ISO 6400, 85mm from about 4 feet.

Curious this reads as if you are saying the 60D and t3i will handle high ISO noise identically. Is this true?

And I have a flash, radio transmitters, umbrella, the works. Thanks for the suggestions that is not what I'm asking about. (See earlier comments).

I come here for your expert opinion. Please do not hesitate to critique or edit.

Yes. They have the same sensor and if memory serves correctly, the same processor too.
