Ok so I've been waiting for a long time and the the time is almost here when I'll get a much wanted 5D. I'm just up in the air about which one. I've been looking at all 3 5d threads and I have to admit that I'm at a loss over the 5DII. It seems to be lacking a bit compared to the 5Dc and 5DIII. Am I the only one who thinks this? Maybe I've been looking at the threads too long, but I'm just not blown away by the 5DII images as compared to the 5DIII or even the 5Dc. Am I missing something?

I know some of you out there have both, or have at least used both or all 3. What are you thoughts?

The downside to the getting the 5DIII would be that it would eat up most of my budget and not leave room for a new lens. Either a 5Dc or II would leave room for at least 1 new lens so I was leaning towards a C or II, but going back to my original question...is there something going on IQ-wise with 5DII that I'm missing?

Yes. Nothing wrong with the 5D2. 6D is better though.

If you get the Mk II , you will have buyers remorse.. Get the 5d Mk III and get on with it.

I say that because I love spending other people's money :)

No really... you should !

Many people say 5D2 is revolution vs 5Dc; and 5D3 is evolution from 5D2 only. Also a used 5D2 only 1/3 of the 5D3 cost, so 5D2 is a better option for someone getting into FF.

5D3 is much more fun to use anyway.

I've heard the 5dc actually takes sharper images then the 5dII even with less MP.

I own a 5dc even my friend that has a 5dII told me if i'm going for pure better imagine quality and don't care about video or nicer LCD then go with the 5dc. If i had the money i prob would have bought the mark II just to have something a bit more modern. but the quality of this 5dc totally blows away imagine quality on the newer rebel XSI i was using before. I read a few of the ken Rockwell links and he even claims IQ is better on the 5dc then the 5d2 i guess per pixal its sharper.

Who is this Ren Rockwall you speak of Nissanfairlady?

Anyway, my suggestion would be a 6D. Just a bit more expensive than a used 5DII and you would still have $1000-$1500 to spend on a lense or two. IQ alone will be just as good as any 5D, and you'll be gaining speed over 5Dc and mark II.

I'd get the 5D3 personally because of the AF. The 50, 85, and 28-75 will do just fine for now.

per pixel, the 5Dc is sharper, but no way total sharpness is better than the 5D2. 5D2 is quite a big jump from the 5Dc. Video was revolutionary, as was llive view, MFA, dust shaker, and also has a good amount higher ISO capability. It also has an Ok ISO auto along with huge support from magic lantern. Generally speaking, the 5dc produces more pleasing files compared to even late model crop bodies. I had compared the files from the 5Dc and EOS-M, and the 5Dc gave better results.

the lack of modern features was a huge annoyance. the lack of Live view would be a deal breaker for many, myself included.

If you mainly use center point only, don't need ISO higher than 1600 and can live with the 5Dc AF system, the 6D and 5D3 offer very little over the 5Dc. The 5D2 seems like a half-step to me. More MP, same AF, plus video. Of course you'll get a lot trinkets and doodads with the newer ones that the 5Dc doesn't have. If you need them, you need them. If you compare raw IQ at ISO 1600, I doubt you could tell any one of them from the other.

Dedicated APS-c shooter. Gripped 60D, 60 2.8, 10-22, 15-85, Σ70-200 OS and a big white something or other! Plus a 5D w/28-75.

I agonized for a while like yourself about upgrading from a 5D to either the 5D MII or MIII. I decided to go with a 1DS MIII for some of these features.

Micro Adjust capabilities
Live View
100% Viewfinder
45 focus points
21 Megapixels
2000 shots on a fully charged battery is no problem
Image quality is easily as good as the 5D or 5DMII
LCD and Viewfinder are both bright and easy to see, even in direct sunlight

I know the 1DS MIII wasn't in your options you mentioned, but it is a very good alternative especially if you like to use any focus points other than the center when shooting.

Since you didn't mention what you shoot and you have considered 5D2, I would recommend the 6D over 5D2.

Conventional wisdom: 6D + good lens > 5D3 as long as money is constant.
Practical Wisdom: 5D2 + good lens > 5D3 + some cash. (Hopefully you can find one for a decent price.)
