Hi
Am getting very confused trying to buy a UV filter in 86mm size for my Sigma lens. On the official Hoya site they don't list any. But various sites have some for sale, and it's hard to work out what may be genuine. Let alone which type to suit the sigma 150/500.
I don't want to pay the earth, as will remove filter as/when appropriate. But really want to protect that lens!
Any advice or recommendations appreciated
Thanks
Lyn

Lyn, what do want to "protect" your lens against?

USE the OEM lens hood (that should have been supplied with the lens) and you'll be protecting the lens against most things that you might want protection against.

I know there is a divide of opinions on this, I have extensively researched. But my personal choice is to keep filters on my lenses most of the time, but I know it's not others. I am accident prone as far as knocks and scratches. I find it better for selling on lenses. I could also say I want to protect it from my dear hubby! Who is far from careful with my equipment, as he is less familiar with than me lol
My question however, is more around what choice to buy at 86mm size, as there is less availability at that size without a costa fortune

Lyn, my suggestion would be to simply use the lens cap whenever the lens in not in use. Train the hubby in doing the same thing. The price of decent quality UV filters in 86mm size is something I would NOT pay when the filter cannot possibly improve any images.

Sigma actually make a set of filters to work with the lens. The quality is good, and
so is the price. I agree it won't improve the picture quality, but if you're at a beach
or someplace with blowing dust/dirt, it can help protect the lens. Even walking thru
brush around a lake, trying to get photos of birds, it helps protect the lens better
than just using the hood.

Against what? Do you really think a twig is going to do any serious damage to the front element of a lens?

What film are you shooting?

If you're not shooting film, UV filters do nothing positive for your images. Use your hood.

Small twigs, no, but the half inch rebar someone hid in the brush sure did.

Do you really think a 1mm thick piece of glass is going to get hit by a half inch rebar and do anything apart from shatter into thousands of fragments?
