So, I was talking to my friend and he is a Canon engineer and to my surprise Canon will sell them a 1DX for $2500. My jaw fell to the ground after he told me. Unfortunately, he was told to sign a contract preventing him from helping his friends purchase at such a discounted price. I really wish he didn't tell me.vmad

Staff discount is pretty normal with most businesses.

For obvious reasons, they do try and limit it to personal purchases only, otherwise staff would be buying a LOT of stuff and putting it on ebay.

This is why, if you look in the employee car park at a car assembly plant, it is very biased towards models built by that company. The workforce can get them a LOT cheaper than another brand.

Most jobs have some type of "perk" or employee discount associated with them. It doesn't surprise me that Canon is no different.

You have a friend working as an engineer for Canon, and you didn't ask him about possible employment openings?

For who? If it's for me I am a bone doctor. I will ask him if you are interested.

So if Canon can sell a 1DX to engineers for $2500, what is the cost in comparison to the raw amount that it costs Canon to make each 1DX?

I guess what I'm asking is, at that price, is Canon selling the 1DX to engineers at a loss, or does a 1DX cost less than $2500 for Canon to make?

Exactly! Is the 1DX another over priced iPhone?

Nice perks. As a university employee I get Microsoft and Adobe products free, but that's a drop in the bucket compared to a $2500 1Dx. That's a sweet deal.

Perks like this reduce internal theft as well and encourage better product knowledge. I just purchased Adobe Creative Suite for $10.43 as part of our education consortium. That was pretty good I thought.

Canon does have a rather large medical/health care branch...

The parts in it may cost that much.

The price we pay pays for R+D, shipping, warehousing, warranty costs, a whole bunch of other stuff.
Plus the costs of the raw parts, wages for people to assemble them, and a bit of profit for Canon.

My work gets a discount on Canon stuff too - not quite that good though (and it's for company gear only, employees can't use it)

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the raw cost of materials for a 1DX is $2,500. But the cost to engineer, develop, create, distribute, market, and export the 1DX is what drives the cost to be what it is. The numbers seem about right to me and are perfectly acceptable. One has to remember that Canon is not selling millions of 1DX s...

Canon may sell it at a "loss" but that's the wrong way to think about it. If Canon sells it to the employee at a 'loss' of, say $500 (random figure), that's like saying, here, have a one time $500 "bonus" if you will.

In addition, Canon just got another user who will be using their system (and perhaps preaching to others).
