Just out of curiosity the brown pelican in the first photo was standing on shore next to a dead pelican that had washed up. I didn't notice the pelican in the seaweed as I was walking by until after he entered the water. He refused to fly and as soon as I took my shots and continued on down the beach he waded back on shore and continued over watch of the deceased pelican. My question is I have heard of pair bonding and mourning in other bird species but this brown pelican had immature colors is it possible that was what I was witnessing? I did not see any marks or any other reason as to why it could not fly and also no other reason for it to come right back to shore and stand watch. Also he did this twice both times I walked past him

here is the photo of him standing guard I did not know that the dead pelican was buried in the seaweed when I took the shot.....by the time I noticed the dead pelican (by the smell) the one standing guard was in the water

Very nice series, excellent control of the whites in the bright sun. DeSoto is a great location, I wish I lived closer.

It's possible that the deceased Pelican was a sibling. Some young birds get attached and some go their own way early on. They're more like us than many people realize, the more we watch the more it becomes obvious. Thanks for sharing the story.
