EDIT: Please provide good unbiased feedback. If you are going to start bashing then please refrain from posting. This is an unbiased review by me who owns the Tamron and I clearly define the differences without judgement on either lens. Lets face the FACTs. For many the Tamron provides a GOOD alternative to the best of the best at a substantial lower price.

This review is targeted not for those who have the best or can afford the best. It's for the average person, a hobbyist, that factors cost into their purchases. This is to aid anyone looking to purchase either of these lenses to help them make their own decision.

In this last review of the Tamron I take a different approach. I only had the MK2 lens for one week. During this week I was working 60hours at work and in the middle of installing a new floor in my foyer. Talk about busy ha. I didn't have the time to fully dial in the lenses to make sure the focus matched so instead what I did is I took 4 samples of each scene with each lens. In this order 1. regular focus center point, 2. Live view manual focus 10x, 3. live view contrast, 4. back to regular focus. I took the best matching of the two lenses and this is what you see. I did a straight import into LR4.3 and exported using the lightroom defaults. I will now give you my verdict then list what I feel is a unbiased comparison between the two lenses. Finally I will post up 26 different scenes where I comment on each one and comment on areas to look at. You can also click on the image to see the full size image (~9-13MBea) so you can download them and process them for your review. I don't feel like posting the raws. Too much data. On to my comparison:

The winner: Canon 70-200 2.8 MK2
Tamron: Not far behind and the better performer for the dollar

MY COMPARISON
At 100% in every single photo I can clearly pick out the Canon. It lives up to it's legendary expectations of being the "Holy Grail" of zooms. In every single sample the colors are more accurate, deeper and the sharpness edges out the Tamron time and time again. However, the Bokeh in busy backgrounds the winner is the Tamron producing smoother creamier blurs. Also the CA is better controlled on the Tamron than the Canon. Back to colors I mentioned the colors on the Canon was truer and deeper meaning to me it has better microcontrast, however, the Tamron has a warmer color in all the photos. This could be a good thing for portraits. The sunset colors are better on the Tamron. Flare on both lenses are very well controlled and was hard for me to produce. The Tamron has more vignetting at all focal lenghts which again would be great for portraits. Focus breathing is a big topic on these lenses. At MFD the canon images are larger... much larger. At about 125' away the difference is only slight and at infinity the Tamron is actually slightly larger, go figure. Autofocus on both are very accurate and the speed from infinity to mfd is very close to eachother. Focusing on subjects that were 15' away to subjects that were 100' away was instant on both. The difference is the sound. The canon is completely silent while the Tamron although quiet you can faintly hear it. Because of this it gives you the feeling it's slower because you can hear it but side by side tests to me the Tamron is very close to the Canon. As far as SERVO tracking... I can only comment that when the Tarmon was mounted on a 5D3 it was dead on accurate. On my 6D using center point and my kids riding scooters zipping past me and toward me I had the same amount of failures with the Canon as I did with the Tamron. This tells me when it's time to track I need to add a 7D or move to the 5D3.

MY CONCLUSION
If your income solely relys on your images, get the Canon. If you have an abudance of money and desire the best, get the Canon. If you even have to think about money, get the Tamron. If you do portraits then definitely get the Tamron. If you want the amazing 6 year warranty, get the Tamron. At the end of the day I ask myself this. Is it worth the extra $1,000? I answer that by asking myself another question... Would I rather have the Canon mk2 or would rather have the Tamron and the Sigma 35? (or insert another lens here)... Look at these samples and you be your own judge.

Disclaimer: There are small differences in these samples, however, this is a slap in your face put up or shut up back and forth lens swap comparison samples. They are all handheld with IS on. I don't need to hear about complaining that these are unfair w/o tripod etc. This is real world testing. I have alot of samples here for you to draw your own conclusions.

ADJUSTING TAMRON TO MEET CANON
I will say this... in MOST cases if you are using Lightroom sliders. A bump in contrast to +10, blacks set to -15, sharpness set to +37 (stock is +25) you will produce an image that is VERY close to the Canon. This should give you an idea of the difference in the post processing differences. In most cases this matches the Canon. In some it still doesn't match and in others it exceeds the Canon.

MY FAVORITE SCENES
6, 16, 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, 25

ALL SHOTS ARE AT 2.8 - I HAVE POSTED WHAT MM FOR EACH SCENE AND/OR FOR EACH LENS

SCENE 1 - 200mm 2.8
I shot this from inside my living room through a dirty window. The wind was blowing slightly so some leafs can be directly compared while some can't because of them moving in and out of focus.

SCENE 2 - 200mm 2.8
I do believe the Tamron nailed focus on the flag. Look at the threading on the right side near the hook. The Canon focus was a tad front which shows well in the tree being much sharper. Looking at the leafs on the right the Tamron is better but again I think the difference here was focus not matching up precisely.

SCENE 3 - 70mm 2.8
Focus on these are pretty darn close. What sticks out to me is the fact the Canon has more CA on the hook.

SCENE 4 - 70mm 2.8
Had some change in lighting on this one but pay attention to the threading on the straps and the bolt head on the ratchet

SCENE 5 - 70mm 2.8
With the Canon you can see more detail in the lips but the eyes are pretty close, Canon having a slight edge but for Portraits the Tamron would smooth out some of that fine detail in the pores giving an advantage of not being killer sharp like the Canon. I have no issues with the Tamron on this sample

SCENE 6 - 200mm 2.8
Look at the gas vent… very close. The dish itself has a tad sharper and tad blacker letters but it's really close even at 100%. The Tamron has more vignetting in the sky.

SCENE 7 - 200mm 2.8
Excuse the mess… I've since completed the floor and it looks really good. Look mainly at the texture of the wooden handle and the bristles. The canon has slightly more detail at 100%. However you can't really see a difference with the texture to the right of the handle on the wall thats in focus.

SCENE 8 - Canon 160mm 2.8 / Tamron 200mm 2.8
I really wanted to challenge the Tamron. I shot this with the Tamron at 200mm and moved myself to match up as close as I could with the Canon set to 160mm. Perspective might be a tad different and focus might be a hair off but look at the letters on the stereo and look at the letters on the speaker on the right side. The Tamron does a good job at it's weakest 200mm keeping up with the Canon at 160mm

SCENE 9 - Canon 145mm 2.8 / Tamron 200mm 2.8
Again challenging the Tamron at it's weakest here is another sample. Not much in focus but you can see the texture of the fabric and compare. This is at ISO 8000 also. Notice the colors with the Canon being deeper. Pretty typical.

SCENE 10 - 200mm 2.8
Another indoor ISO 5000 sample. Not much to report here other than than at 14' away the Canon is larger.

SCENE 11 - 200mm 2.8

The wind was moving the palms around some so the exact lineup might not be perfect with a 1/125 shutter on these images. Still easy to see differences.

Nothing better than a brick test. Easy to see the resolving power of the Canon. Look at the colors too. I did not stand in the same place so it doesn't line up perfectly

SCENE 13 - 200mm 2.8
Look at the reflections in the left side of the car. Look at the color of the tail lights. Look at the Bokeh of the red bicycle to the right of the car. Look at the grass on right side near the driveway. Draw your own conclusions

SCENE 14 - 200mm 2.8
Tamron has more vignetting. This is a weird one. Focus was close to infinity or right at it. Size of the two isn't that off actually the Tamron may be slightly larger. I wish I would of framed it better. Compare the leaves all over. In some areas the canon is sharper in some others the Tamron is sharper. This tree was maybe 250' away so the DOF should be ~75' which should have the entire tree in focus.

SCENE 17 - Canon 140mm 2.8 / Tamron 135mm 2.8
The exposure was off by one stop the Tamron was brighter so I adjusted it by one stop, maybe it doesn't match perfectly but you can still see some texture on the plastic to compare

SCENE 21 - 200mm 2.8
Ok, another weird example. Look at the bushes under the number… the Canon is sharper but the bushes by the door the Tamron is sharper. Center brick between the windows is pretty similar.

SCENE 22 - Canon 190mm 2.8 / Tamron 200mm 2.8
I made sure to stand in the same spot and wanted to try to match up the sizing the best I could. The canon even at 190mm is still slightly larger. This shot was about 20' away. Again giving the Tamron a disadvantage of being at it's weakest 200mm it does very well against the Canon giving only a marginal victory to the Canon. The colors are warmer on the Tamron.

SCENE 23 - 200mm 2.8
Great example here mainly on the Bokeh. Look at the truck in the background. Tamron is smoother and less busy. Look at the red bicycle to the far right also. Plant on the left is sharper on Tamron while center stalk on the center plant is sharper on Canon. The bottom right hand leaves or whatever they are called are pretty darn close between the two.

Look at the wheel on the trashcan, the grass behind it and the hinge on the top. The white letters are a tad better on the Canon and there are spots where the canon pulls ahead but other spots that the Tamron shows equalness or slightly better.

SCENE 26 - 200mm 2.8
Focus is slightly off on this one. Best spot to compare is the wheel on the van.

I'm not regretting my Tamron purchase at all, especially after seeing these comparison shots

Not once in all the shots I've taken with the Tamron have I wished it to be sharper. I've been very impressed. It wasn't until you see the side by sides that you realize that the Canon has an edge.

Overall... with the 6 year warranty and the fact I got my Tamron new for 1200. I will hold on to it for a long time. I'd rather have another very good lens to go along with it than to only have the Canon.

But like you said... is that edge worth another $800-900? I think not.

Nice review thanks for taking the time to do this. From the images the Canon looks quite a bit sharper (perhaps it's just me). Wonder how good the regular 70-200 2.8 Non IS is in terms of image quality if you really don't need the IS/VC.

What about the ability to track a fast moving subject? The Tamron seems to be nice image quality wise, but through the camera in AI servo and take some action shots and let's see how it does.

On a 5D3 for the limited time I had the chance I didn't have any issues. Granted it wasn't enough time to really push the limits on the testing.

I don't think you are taking the time at really looking at all of the image to see. Unfortunately the focus is not dead on equal on all of them. There are parts where the Tamron is as sharp as the canon.

Most of these images are 200mm 2.8 on FF w/ distances of less than 20' most of having DOF of only a few inches.

Yes the Canon is sharper, but the Tamron does quite nicely against it.

I'm a Canon guy all the way. We tried non canon lenses years ago and were put off by the quality and durability. I love my canon 70-200 2.8
