Hello all. I haven't had much time to take pictures of late, and I've had even less time to post on here. I've got about $10k tied up into my Nikon kit, and it is not seeing much use. Today I saw the 6D with all of the goodies on Slickdeals, via BuyDig, and thought to myself I could downgrade and have some extra money for other things. My question is, will I regret my decision? I'm not shooting tons of action, occasionally a youth flag football game, or a youth basketball game, but normally just portraits and family events. I figured the 6D would be great for low light. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I would keep what you have. Just my 2 cents.

IF you looking for more cash. I would say rent it for a few days and test it out for what you shoot 90% of the time. If your not using your current system its a waste just sitting there. I prefer the Canon Glass to Nikon glass. I love my 6D and think its a great system however this is my first step into full frame.

Honestly If you aren't using your 800D and you use your Eos M why not just sell everything and move onto something else esp. if you find yourself a more compact system person.

Something I forgot to mention in my first post is that I am originally a Canon shooter. I started out with a Rebel XT, moved to a T3i, then to a 5D, then a 5DII. I switched to Nikon when the D800 came out, but I honestly miss the colors and glass from Canon. So this was a dual purpose move really. Get a little extra money to put into some other hobbies, and go back to Canon.

I use the EOS-M when I don't feel like lugging the DSLR. I don't think I would want a compact system to be my main camera.

I'm not being a jerk, but it sounds like you're fickle. You have had some pretty nice cameras. I'm guessing this is something you are going to have to decide. Whenever you're constantly changing equipment whether it be a car, camera, bike etc, you're fighting a losing battle on the money end. I typically like to use equipment til it dies or becomes outdated to the point where you can noticeably see a difference. I'm still driving my 70 beetle and 2002 golf.

I had my XT until it broke actually. It is now a nice paperweight. I am not being fickle though. I am getting married in March, and figured by downsizing and getting a cheaper camera I could put a couple thousand towards my wedding/honeymoon.

I see no reason not to rent a 6d for a weekend or a couple of days (hopefully you have a Canon lens still).
The 6d will give you amazing ISO, very light weight and straight forward body, and the typical Canon colors. You'll get smaller files for sure ;)

Everyone has their own opinions. But I see no reason to buy anything considering the setup the op has now.

I think if I downgraded I would hate it.
To release cash if essential I would keep my 5D3 and the 70-200 F2.8 IS USM II, and sell the rest. But keep my core.
As lenses are a major component we can't really advise without knowing what they are , do you have $7K of lenses for the Nikon? What lenses do you have for the 6D?
Wow you will lose so much money!
Seems an awfully fickle way to loose cash - not being mean just saying it as I see it.
Personally I would sell them and the Canon lenses and stay with Nikon.
Never used a D800 but hear its a very nice camera.

I agree with Frodge.

Keep what you have and perhaps have a simple and good wedding. Until you have more time, then the D800 will be of good service again. It's a great camera.

Besides, what does the 6D + sidedeals have which you don't have now and that you absolutely need right now?

The 6D is an awesome camera, paired with a 24-105 and 70-200 you'll have a great kit. I shot a bantam football tournament this weekend with a rented 100-400 and used ISO as high as 12,800 and needed no noise reduction at all.

It's a great camera!

Switching later will cause even a larger loss of money. Time is of the essence if somebody wants to shift platforms. People cross or down-grade all the time to create funds for a life event. Not a big deal really, and it seems REALLY silly to have $10K wrapped up in equipment that will drop in value over time, especially if it isn't being used.

I know not of any reasonably financially sound individual that would say to keep a large sum of money wrapped up in a hobby purchase that is sure to depreciate over time, and isn't being used. Re-evaluate, liquidate, and moderate your next purchase... my answer anyways based purely on logic and not emotion.

bw! I agree with this user. Why keep something that isn't being used. You could use funds elsewhere.

you say your not shooting much now, then sell the Nikon D800 keep your Canon EOS M. With a 6D will you suddenly have time to use it to warrant the cost of a 6D camera & good glass ? I guess it comes down to the 10K worth of equipment new is what dollar value used ?
