Had to take advantage of the great weather this past weekend and had a family shoot at a local park in Fresno. Ok so it wasn't exactly "local" since it was a little under an hour drive away but none-the-less it was a great time. This young family was awesome to work with. They wanted family photos before mom and baby head back to Texas to stay with family while dad starts getting ready for an upcoming deployment. Here are a few from the session...

Love the idea of #1. Can't wait to try it.

You have image editing on, so I took a quick swipe at this using iPhoto of all things.... when using a flash and natural light the flash will come off as cool and unnatural. I just warmed it and boosted the saturation slightly.

i agree now that i look at it. problem with me is that when I edit a photo, I think it looks fine at that moment. The next day, I see the problems. :P

I think the OP's #3 looks closer to what their natural complexion would be.

Possibly, #2 is pretty warm, so was trying to get it closer to that, iPhoto isn't exactly lightroom either :)

shooting in mid day hot sun is a challenge in its self. the contrast is too high as a result. when faced with situations like this, i always use a polariser to cut of specular highlights from grass and tree leaves or try to compose without showing too much contrast between sun and shade, as you have done in #1 which is my favorite of the 3 images

Thanks for all the feedback guys! I hate shooting in midday sun but sometimes there are no other options becasue of schedules. I did notice that #2 was a bit warm but I kind of liked it like that. Mom liked it too and wanted it printed, I DID cool it off a bit though for the print.

I probably should have mentioned it in the OP but #3 was towards the end of the shoot once I had gotten the shots that I wanted. I started experimenting and playing with the light to see how much I could tame that ambient light in the background. For a little YN-560II I think it did pretty well and I liked the result. :-)

Agreed. Looks like fashionrider's screen isn't calibrated.. that's how I see photos from non-calibrated screen often turn out.
