Articles have been written about the supposed longevity of CD vs DVD, and the different types (write once vs. re-writeable). Pressed CD and DVD (what you buy with precorded music and movies) are very different that ones that you burn on a writer! ALL the ones you burn use Organic Dyes, not unlike color film and color photographic prints use organic dyes. So if you worry about film fading or losing color faithfullness, you should worry about CD/DVD fading to the point you can no longer read them! You must be as careful with burnable CD/DVD as you would be storing color negatives and prints! And rewriteables are NOT meant to be as permanent once written, as the write-once disks.
It is also generally suggested that burnable DVD is less permanent that the burnable CD!

The on-line help service (HP) person told me that any DVD-R should work in my burner and sugested that I uninstall and then reinstall the drivers for my burner. I have not done that yet. Maybe I'll do it aftere the State of the Union speech.
