This was up on the Ricoh page earlier today, but has since been pulled. Looks like it's a high-end prosumer camera and, based upon the K-5ii, it probably will have superb dynamic range and noise control. A really significant feature is the ability to "turn on or off" the anti-aliasing filter. Not sure how that will work, but it is a very nice feature. It probably uses the same sensor technology as the Nikon D600 and D800; here are a few features:

  • 24MP APS-C sensor
  • 8.3 second continuous shooting (for up to 22 RAW shots or 60 JPEGs)
  • 27-point AF (25 cross-type)
  • 0.95x magnification optical viewfinder with 100% coverage
  • 100-51200 ISO
  • max 1/8000 of a second shutter
  • H.264 Full HD video at 60, 50, 30 and 24p

Hello, Canon, are you there?

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

What a shame you can't adapt Canon lenses on it!

Having had a soft spot for Pentax stuff for a long time this operative word MAY be enough to get me to switch systems. I'll have to see how much it is and if Pentax will continue to make the mount so you can use any Pentax lens ever made for the K mount

EDIT: just saw the rumored pricing of $1300 body only or $1650 with a DA 18-135 lens. Not bad though I could get into a 5D or 1D series body for that kind of money hmmm tough choice.

Body:50D gripped Magic Lantern'd
Lenses:50mm 1.8,40mm 2.8,28-105 USM II,70-210 F4, 1962 Asahi Pentax Super Takumar 55mm 1.8
Flash: Canon 430 EX
The camera is just a tool - it is not responsible for the picture.

Update on DPP. Looks like Pentax has a crafty way of mimicking the AAF by vibrating the sensor during exposure:

Ricoh, now owners of the Pentax brand, has continued the tradition of innovation, no better illustrated than with the concept of a digital SLR that has an anti-aliasing effect that can be turned on at the push of a button (Nikon recently patented a concept that accomplishes the same thing, but in a different manner). However, it hasn't accomplished this by having the filter just drop into place. No, Pentax is using its sensor-shift image stabilizer to deliberately move the sensor during the exposure, slightly blurring the image to mimic the effects of an optical low-pass filter. Not only can this be turned on and off, Pentax is also offering two 'intensities' to choose from.

Pentax k3 officially announced today

Hey everyone, just thought id give the heads up on the pentax k3 that was officially announced today. It has some very interesting specs for its price, 24mp, 8.3 fps and 27 af points 25 of which are cross type for $1299. How do you guys reckon it will fair against the 7D mk ii when it comes out?

Ps i added a photo just incase you wanted to see what it looked like

Cheers

I'm drooling a bit over the Limited Silver Edition K3

We can all be only who we are, no more, no less.

Bah, dual SD cards instead of CF. I HATE SD cards...

But really I think the only big draw back on this new camera is the limited line up for their super telephoto options. I haven't seen much in the way of complaints for general optical quality in most of the decent grade lenses for the Pentax connector, so if someone was happy working with under 300mm with somewhat limited options past 100mm or so, then this looks like a very nice little system.

Will be interesting to see how well Pentax does with future bodies in the next decade or so. If they can improve their lens lineup then we might easily see a shift from the "Big 2" to the "Big 3".

Have not found a Canon v Pentax K3 review yet, but have a look at the K3 v D600 ...

The K3 sweeps the D600 under the table!

No idea. Does Canon offer a medium format body?

Is it any less limiting that canon doesn't offer a medium format? There is nothing magical about a sensor size. It is all a series of compromises.

Plus nothing says Pentax can't decide to revamp their line and move into full frame systems in the future if their market research suggests it is hurting them.

Great camera but $7000.00 is a bit much.
