Again not talking about new prices.

And that's why you can find a used 6D for under $1,400 and a used 5D3 for under $2,300 if you look hard enough.

There is no used market for the 70D yet - it is too new. Completed listings on eBay show one used camera sold $1100. (There was also a BIN at $500 by a seller with zero feedback - sounds like a scam or pricing mistake IMHO.)

After the camera has been out a few months we will begin to see where the price settles at, but $800 at this time screams scam.

BTW, you cannot set a fixed discount for a used vs. new camera / lens. Some high end lenses like the 70-200 2.8 II can easily sell for over $2000 (vs. $2199 new), while a used kit lens like a 18-55 STM or 24-105L often sells for 40 - 50% off the new retail price.

Clemson,

I'm talking about used camera bodies and not new. I should also clarify that the used price tends to generally follow the new price as it moves up and down, but sometimes takes a bit to catch-up. (Which also depends on how savvy your buyers are on the used market.)

Travis,

The 7D is starting to get a little long in the tooth, so yes, it sells for a bit less. But you have to remember, that many of those low sell prices that you see on eBay account for heavily-used camera bodies. For example, a 7D that has 60K clicks will sell for a heck of a lot less then one with 5K clicks.

Bottom line, and my original point behind all of this, is that used camera equipment prices don't typically fall out of the sky like typical electronics. If you take care of your gear and are savvy in how you sell it, camera gear will often surprise you once you realize what it can sell for.

I don't disagree with you in general. It's just that part about being superseded by a couple of new models. I guess it was true before for an upper-tier model. I recall that the price of 5D Mark II stayed steady for quite a long time and it was still considered a good deal at $2,000 just a few months before the 5D Mark III was announced.

Right now, I think the market is saturated with DSLRs. Most people don't really need a new camera, let alone a new APS-C DSLR. They can stick with their old one, pay to upgrade to a full frame if they haven't already done so, or pay for a decent older model like 7D at a great price.

That said, I'm not saying that $800 for a 70D isn't a scam. I agree with all of other posters.

Cheers.

P.S. I might post a like new 70D in the sell forum soon if anyone is interested. LOL

I'll give you $800 for it.

BTW I think everyone is now in agreement this is a scam. That's off the table.

RE: jrbdmb's point with the 70-200 vs 18-55. It's a good point that highlights the importance of technical obsolescence. How long do you think it will be for the 18-55 to have a new version that's sharper, or has a new AF motor, or better IS vs. How long will it be til there's a 70-200 that beats the current one.

Which ironically is the very reason I don't think you can compare lens used value to camera used value. One has inherent physical properties that gives it it's value the other is valuable specifically because it has the latest technology.

I saw this "deal" about a week ago. I saw that it was a new seller, with "contact me at" ikon. That was a clear sign it's a scam, but just for fun I checked what other items the seller was listing. Long list of cameras (7D $400, Nikon D800 for about $1400 etc.) and other expensive electronics waaay underpriced. Yeah right :) Scam.

Has anyone reported him yet to Amazon? I know the scammers always resurface, but lets make his life harder by letting Amazon know so they can shut his account down!

Good idea. Going now.

ETA: He appears to be gone. Now there's one for $871. The kicker. There are 3 in stock for that price. Similar comment of email first.

The guy came here and read these comments. So, he raised the price by $71 thinking it would look less like a scam. :D

I reported the image he had posted and it was gone shortly after, but then there were two more. Not sure Amazon can keep up with them. They should just boot them out of the system.

I can't figure out how to report it. I started through the buying process looking for a "Report problems" and it stopped me and said the item couldn't be shipped to my destination. (Valid CONUS address). I'm sure at that point they are hoping the buyer will email them asking why and they can take the transaction off line. "That's just some weird technical problem. Email me your address and Credit Card information and I'll get THE ITEM shipped today."
