Ok, so as of now I have a 400D, tamron 28-80 f/3.5-5.6 and 70-300 f/4-5.6 and the 50mm F/1.4. I will be picking up a 70D here soon but don't want a kit lens due to the fact I have 2 cheap ones now. I have about $600 to spend on a new lens. I was looking at the Sigma 17-50 2.8. I'm looking for something wider then what I have now but with some range. I was also looking at the 18-35 but the range seems to small to start out with. Any advice would be great. As far a what I shoot, I just shoot everything. The Sigma 70-200 2.8 is my next lens after this lens pick.

Canon 10-20mm if you want something wider. If not, get the sigma or the tamron 17-50. I had the tamron version and was sad to sell it when I switched to a 5d.

Well, it's out of stock at this minute, but if you can snag a EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM Refurbished from the Canon store for $598, I would.

I recommend the 18-135 STM lens. Small, light but a bit expensive new ($549).

Make sure it's the STM version.

It's available as a kit with the 70D. It would be about $349 that way.

If you can live with a slightly slower lens, consider the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens. I don't think the f/4 would be as much an issue with a 70D as it would with the 400D. People report using relatively high ISO with the 70D without much of an issue. I would also consider selling the Tamron 28-80mm once that acquisition is completed.

The newer version of this lens is dock compatible and shown on sale at $500 on Sigma's website.

It is about $200 more than you want to spend, but there's the EF-S 15-85mm IS USM. It gets good reviews. It also is not a constant f/2.8.

Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim

Another vote for the Sigma 17-70 or Canon 15-85 if you don't need fast. The Canon will give you wide and a very good all-purpose range.

I was at about the same place you are a few months ago when I was going to the 60d from the t3. After looking and contemplating I settled on the Sigma. I really like it so far.

if you wanna enjoy the video capability of the 70D, get the 18-135 kits lens. it has good reviews. it's cheaper if you get it as a kit.

Well I'm really thinking it will be the Sigma 17-50 but the 17-70 looks really tempting too. Any one have the 17-70? At 50mm what would I lose, about a half a stop. But I guess that shouldn't matter, @ 50mm I can just use my 1.8. I do think I'm gonna get rid of 28-80 and 70-300 kit ones (not that there worth maybe 20 bucks each). I was thinking of replacing the 70-300 with the Tamron 70-300 VC one. It's on sale and has great reviews and has to be a hell of allot better then what I have now.

I would also consider selling the Tamron 28-80mm once that acquisition is completed.

So i ended up ordering the Sigma 17-50 2.8. I'm gonna order the the Tamron 70-300 to replace the 75-300 I have now why its on sale.
