I've been in the market for a speedlite light modifier for a while now. This will be my "one light" for location photography (mostly outdoors with models) as well as an additional light in the studio (along with strobes I have).

I have come up with the following shopping list. Since it's about (for US users) $600 worth of stuff, I'd like to hear opinions by others on whether this is a good idea or if you would get something else within my budget.

  1. Avenger A4041B 13.5' Alu Boom Stand 41 (Black)
  2. Manfrotto 026 Swivel Umbrella Adapter (Lite-Tite)
  3. Lastolite Ezybox II Speedlight Bracket
  4. Lastolite Ezybox II Square, Large (35.5 x 35.5")
  5. Yongnuo YN-622C (pair)

My logic is that this will give me a flexible, sturdy, large-ish source of light powered by two 580EX flashes I already own.

That said, $600 is a lot for a single light modifier setup and perhaps I'm overlooking better alternatives. I'd really, really appreciate your comments. Thank you.

TT: Looks good to me. You may want to check the specification of the Lastolite Ezybox II Speedlight Bracket as I'm fairly sure that (unlike the Mk 1 version), this includes the swivel connector. You may not need the 026 adapter.

Phil ǁ Kershaw Soho Reflex: 4¼" Ross Xpres, 6½" Aldis, Super XX/ABC Pyro in 24 DDS, HP3/Meritol Metol in RFH, Johnson 'Scales' brand flash powder. Kodak Duo Six-20/Verichrome Pan. Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!

That appears to be the case. :)

Yongnuo is suppose to be coming out with an ST-E3 type of transmitter. It may be worth a look instead of a yN622C as the transmitter.

What benefits would I get? Just the AF-assist?

Never mind, it appears they won't work with the YN622C

Thanks.

Any thoughts on 24" vs 35" for outdoors use?

Get a knock off Westcott type umbrella framed softbox. They are all over Amazon and eBay.
Since you're in Ireland, Phottix via their web store offer some nice Westcott knock-offs.

Get a Phottix mini-boom. Phottix also has a very nice swivel. I don't know about their light stands, but Calumet has some nice ones.
Get the YN-622c triggers.

I think that list will set you back about $200 and be better than the stuff you listed in terms of ease of use and light quality.
