Nope, my stuff is in a couple bags, just sitting on the closet floor :) If anyone is stealing stuff I have much more expensive items to worry about.

Seems a little extreme. Is there a big crime problem in your area?

can you explain why you think it's extreme. it's a $200 box. would a $1000 cabinet be less extreme to you?

I own a home and have insurance too. you must not shoot that often? what happens if all your gear is stolen before you make that trip to Africa or take that vacay to the big island....how long do you suppose it will take to get a check from your insurance company and have you gear tested and replaced?

Eventually I will be moving to a place where I will have a home with lots of entrances and a lot of foot traffic in the area and I have been pondering similar solutions. My thoughts lean more toward a tall gun safe because it can be adapted with shelves and is a little easier on the eyes than the orange box. But both are secure options.

Security wise, yes a cabinet would be less extreme. I just don't feel the need to lock up my gear.

For storage around the home, surplus ammo or tool cans can work well. At http://www.armysurpluswarehouse.com …goggles-storage-case.html (external link) you will find a military grade case originally used for the storage of night vision goggles. For $30 you get an airtight case quite the equal of a much mor expensive Pelican case.

More exist on line but use "can" as part of the search term. Ammo can is military speak for ammo box. I used 50 caliber box a few years back for white water rafting the Colorado. With some foam, it worked like a charm keeping everything dry and also kept sand out. Not bad for $10 at the local Army Navy surplus store.

you sound like a smash and grab burglar's best friend! I store my lenses and other equipment in bags. I want something I can set my bags, tripods into. not a display case. I want something secure, cheap and convenient. if I had a cabinet I bet my gear would still sit in the corner in bags.

see we are on the same wave length :D. I used to have a similar box (but larger) bolted to the bed of my work truck.

This is what I'd like. Still bolted to the floor, like Ed's box, but something with shelves, and height. Of course it costs a lot more. But I'd have room for more stuff than just camera gear.

Hmm... Christmas idea for when the wife asks what I want ;)

I guess I have other means of keeping bad guys out of my stuff. I live down a 1/3 mile gravel driveway in the country. I also have two dogs that wont let your second foot cross the doorway.

Then again I don't have 10k worth of camera gear either.

I also researched gun safes and other safes. Costco has an excellent safe on sale now for $599 but it is massive and weighs a ton (well, a quarter of a ton). I would worry about mold and mildew with a safe.

gun safes are also a great solution if you like the configuration. ijust think a box would be better for my needs.

I want something that when I get home I can just set my gear into and lock it. nothing fancy.
