G2 Zoom problems

I have a G2 bought new with minor use since. Just recently when I power up I can get one or two shots in, but then the camera automatically zooms to the max (optical and digital) and locks up! Even without taking a picture, the camera starts zooming... The good folks at Canon want me to send it back for repairs (not in warranty, $150 to just look without the cost of the fix and no guarantee it will be fixed) or spend another $300 for their "upgrade" program to a refurbed G3. Seems like a no win situation. Has anyone run into this problem, know of a firmware update or can suggest anything? Thanks in advance,
Jack
