Hi there
I have been kicking around the idea of getting a second body
and in my price range I can find some older 1d bodies.

i have seen an used mark IIn, III and possiby a IV in my range
and I was wondering what experience others have.

Would the older mark 1s stand up well against my 7d (i am pretty sure the answer is yes)

anything to consider (beyond the fact that it is an older camera body and used)?

thanks

The 1div isn't older than your 7d, remember that the 7d is having its 4th birthday this week. If you can get the iv, I would say do it. :)

the guy who is interested in selling it - isn't sure if he wants to sell it to me for the budget I have - so that is unsure
i have enough for a 6d but under a 5dIII
i am not locked on the 1d series - but once i saw some of those bodies which i thought were always beyond my budget enter in my budget...i started thinking about it....
i hope this makes sense

1DIII or 1DIV versus 6D would depend on what it would be used for.

I'm actually thinking of both 6D and either 1D3 or 1D4.

Sibil - I am a hobbiest and shoot just about everything
for myself - i focus mostly on macro, though I have started to get into landscape a bit
otherwise - general shooting - kids, family events (the minor ones - we get a professional for the major ones) school plays, tennis practice/games, etc etc etc
low light - outside as well. fast and slow. rarely the portrait.
i think you get the idea

Besides the crop factor, and physical size, perhaps the largest difference is the focusing system. 1D bodies would be great for tennis, but for everything else 6D should be fine.

I could think of several other cases where the 1D bodies would be better, not just tennis. ;)

I bought a mint condition 1D III for 600€ to go along with my 6D for those situations when I need good AF and a little bit of extra reach, very happy with my purchase although the ISO performance isn't as good.

This spring I bought a 1DMk3 that had been serviced for the possible focusing issue. After having it a month, I was ready to sell my 7D and my 5DMk2; I then picked up a 5DMkIII. My present combination is the best I've ever had (for a while I have tried to have two camera bodies). My 1D series body is amazing ...

I've had the original 1D, 1D MII, 7D and now the 1DS MIII. Of the bodies the 1DS MIII is clearly superior in most cases. While iso 3200 is as high as the 1DS MIII goes it has a much better high iso than the 7D body I've owned.

the 1dIIIs is one of the bodies that I haven't really seen on our used camera market...
but it is good to hear that there is some sort of added value to the 1d series up and beyond just the simple comparison of attributes of the camera.

One of the attributes I am interested in - the AF still at F8
however I am still going back and forth (i.e. maybe to save more and get the 5d3) is for the support of the RF of the new flash system.

in so many ways - it just seems that many of the bodies are converging to include some really advanced features that the division between them is sometimes splitting hairs.

Maxdave

do you have a preference when you use one body vs the other?

can you elaborate on the nuances that you see with that pair?

thanks a lot.

I used to think that too

i guess it is also a matter of intimidation both size and by own assessment of my own skills - since I am a hobbiest and not a pro

but then I started looking at the prices of the used cameras - and they aren't nearly as bad as I thought they would be - and the cameras are really good... even if they are older by 2 generations.

So now I need to measure out the desire to have a used camera vs new
pro camera vs not-pro (size, weight, etc)

and i need to check which tool fits my needs the best....
