I use a 200 f/2.8 II prime and a 70-200 f/2.8 IS2 with the 1.4 and 2.0x Mk III extenders.

The speed of AF with the 2.x is frustrating.

If I were to get a 400 f/5.6 prime, would AF speed improve or am I just screwed until I get a supertele and can go 400mm f/4.0?

If I would upgrade, would there be a big difference between a 300mm f/2.8 + extenders and a non-extended f/4.0 or f/5.6?

My imagine composition sucks. I need a heavier lens.

Teleconverters slow the AF speed of lenses. The 400mm f/5.6L would focus faster than either the 200mm or 70-200mm with the 2x teleconverter.

I really dislike TCs. i'd rather crop or just have more environment in my pictures. the 400 f5.6 is very fast focusing. it is a favorite for birders shooting BIF.

As Ed and Kawi said, the 400 f5.6 focuses way way way way way way faster than a 200mm with the 2x TC. It's like, half a second instead of 3 or 4 seconds.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I love TCs on my 300, the 1.4x is fine on the 70-200 but the 2x is just for it's all I have with me but need 400mm. On my 300 the fit on AF/IQ is so small it's hard tell if it was used or not, with the 2x it's a bigger hit but it can just fine for me for things like BIF and motorsports and even though the IQ isn't near what the lens can do naked it's not far off of what a 600mm lens does(I'm sometimes amazed at how sharp many of the shots I've taken with the 2x on are).

Both the 400 4/5.6 have great AF and are lighter(mostly just the 5.6) but personally I'd take my 420 f4(300+1.4x) over them because I also get a 300 f2.8 and 600 f5.6. The 400 f5.6 doesn't take a 1.4x very well, the f4 does better with TCs but it's as good as it's f2.8 big white brothers.

OK, I guess my 2x extender will end up in the marketplace. It's pretty big anyway so the whole affair didn't quite work the way I wanted with weaseling myself into a small bag. Sometimes I'm using extenders on my TS-Es but the 1.4x will do there, too.

Thanks so much guys.
