Since much of my work is architectural, I own the Canon 17 and 24 TS-E lenses. They are wonderful glass, very sharp and flat of field. They are not however, lenses I want to hand hold, and with their considerable weight, carry around in my shoulder bag all day when traveling. I decided recently that I wanted to get a 24MM lens that was both light in weight and smaller than the very expensive Canon 24MM 1.4 L glass. I had been thinking about the new Canon 24MM 2.8 IS for a while, but the high price put me off. Last month Canon knocked the price down enough to catch my attention and this month added a $50 instant rebate sweetener. At $549.00 it became a viable purchase.

You can read my review of the Canon 24MM 2.8 IS at www.foto-gizmo.blogspot.com (external link) if you are interested.

Now posted on my blog: http://foto-gizmo.blogspot.com …ith-canon-24mm-28-is.html (external link)

Thanks for that. I had the 24 IS for about two weeks before I returned it. I found the IS worked fine and the lens is miles better than the one it replaced. I wanted it to serve dual duty on my APSc and FF as a low light, tight quarters lens. At that it was no better than my Tamron 17-50 on APSc or 28-75 on FF. It turns out that I needed aperture more than anything at this focal length. I will wait until I can afford the EF 24mm f/1.4L II, which may be on version III before I can actually afford it.

Dedicated APS-c shooter. Gripped 60D, 60 2.8, 10-22, 15-85, Σ70-200 OS and a big white something or other! Plus a 5D w/28-75.

Thanks for taking the time to write this review. I own this lens' predecessor. It's decent for what it is, and it looks like the new one only improves things! I am happy that Canon still makes a light weight, relatively inexpensive 24mm lens.
