Spaceweather tells us that these sunspots "have 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic fields that harbor energy for X-class solar flares".

Single shot with a 7D and 60 FS-C - silver sheet filter (home made from A4)

Good set up, good acquisition, good processing.
Only with home made filters, watch for precious eyes and then camera's sensor.

Thanks for the kind words :) I usually stack about 100 frames or so, but single frame exposures seem very decent.

It so happens that 77mm filters perfectly fit on the FS-C, so I stuck on the inside of a polarising filter a cutout from an A4 Baader solar sheet.

Setup looks like this:

With Baader, you are in good hand.
Keep up the good work.

Nice shot Tony - I like it when you can see two shades of grey in the spots. It usually means focus is spot-on and that turbulence was not-so-brutal. Is this a glass-filter that you use? I only tried these sheets..

I use Registax (Win) or Nebulosity (Mac). Any such software first aligns the frames, then stacks them using a variety of settings (median stack, arithmetic, etc).

The idea is to improve the signal to noise ratio, so you can "pull" on the levels in post-processing without getting too much noise.

The Baader sold here is a silver sheet that looks much like regular flower wrap. The darker version (that you seem to have) is what they call here "Mylar". This Mylar gives a nice, orange sun when photographed and they boast "true colour", unlike the silver version that is supposed to show more detail, but with the WB shifted towards red.

Will you tell me how satisfied you are with Nebulosity? I have recently switched to mac and it seems astro software is virtually non-existent.

I tried to stack the sun shots, but found it dificult to align as it was asking for stra alignment, tried using the spots, but did not wor; photoshop layer was easier but not sharp.

BTW E_L; Why is that your images are almost 90 degree counter clock rotated?
Did you take the images with portrait mode of camera when shutter side of camera body was up and forgot to correct the final images?
