I just replaced an all-in-one HP printer/scanner/copier/fax machine with a new Canon Pixma 100 printer. I now have the ability to print all sorts of beautiful prints.

What I am now missing, however, is the ability to scan. I'd like a scanner I can tuck away, easily pull out, scan a document or two when needed, put it back.

On the photo side of things, I guess it would also be nice to be able to have some photographic scanning capability: Scanning old photos and negatives.

I see Canon has a CanonScan LiDDE 110, but I was also looking at the CanoScan 9000F MKII, which seems to be more for photography.

Are any of these good, or should I look outside of the Canon eco system?

If you just want an office scanner, any $100 scanner will do. The Epson V500 might also be worth a look.

If you have only 35mm film and prints to scan, buy a good office scanner then look for a used film Nikon scanner.

If you have larger format film to scan, the Epson V700 or V750 are in a class by themselves for photographic capability. My experience is that anything less will be a disappointment and will eventually be replaced by one of the Epsons anyway. They maybe bigger than you would like (and more expensive) but they are the best choice.

If you just need something to scan documents and basics, head down to your local Salvation Army or Goodwill. They usually have a butt-load of scanners for about $10. Some of them can be decent quality ones.

I would recommend a cheap regular scanner for your documents, and your best negative "scanner" is your dslr. Go read up...

your not telling us what your scanning? there is no single scanner that will do it all under 8k $thousand... I own 7 scanners... OCd?

books
color photos
printed magazine
film negatives
copy stand
3d objects

usb or scsi

Umax has great old school scanners (Os9) any newer than this puts a digital signature aka tracker back to host computer.

The best all time scanner software was called "Scan Prep Pro" on a powerlook 2. this combo slayed the $1 million dollar dedicated drum scanners and even the 20k howtek drum scanner brand.

it remove moire lines, did best line art and was enabled for over 200 scanners.

I cherish my PSD v6 and SPP!! no digital footprint and can enlarge over 8000% and remove screens/I have 3 dedicated units running today.

I have a dedicated scanners on several macs and pc's which create hassle free full histogram scans compatible with anything available today...

let me know if you need to see proof.. i'll post here....

another great scanner is the canon 2050 or 2080c for documents along wth abby fine reader 11

can convert 500 page documents into ocr in under an hour. ocr = ms word text

umax power look 1-2-3, photoshop 5.5 or 6, scam prep pro - no longer in biz.. can find as a torrent.

Bumping this thread after spending a week or so picking out a scanner for a project on tight deadline....

After clicking around through reviews on various sites, I concluded Epson seemed to get the most positive press. I looked at the highly recommended V700 machine but couldnt justify the $629 price (B&H). I ended up picking the Epson V550 which I found at my local Office Depot on sale for $180. It appears that there is no technical difference from the V600 other than the more expensive model has some additional software including PSE (which I already have installed).

I've been very pleased with the results, and impressed by the quality of scans from old 35mm negatives. Compared to (2) different Epson all-in-ones I have access to, it's a step above in scan quality and the Epson Scan software works pretty well. It's not fast, but none of the machines appear to be unless you shell out some real bucks. Scanning negatives at 4000dpi is particularly pokey, but that's no surprise. The software pulls up the separate images quick in preview mode so you can select which ones you want before starting the full scan. The V550 so far looks like a good buy for the money.
