Black Harlequin

Mixed feelings about this encounter. On the one hand I was excited to have found this black Harlequin ladybird. On the other hand (and on a more sinister note) I was disappointed to read that these ladybirds will prey on our smaller native British species. Perhaps this goes some way to explain why Harlequin numbers are increasing and native species (like the 2 and 7 spot) are decreasing.

Not seen them munching native Ladybirds but I have seen their larva preying on their own kind so I guess it must be possible.

the same is going on here with the intrusive harlequins competing with our native species,with some species declining rapidly.

I'm ambivalent about the harlequins- they do come in an interesting range of colours and patterns and I certainly would not deliberately kill them.

Thanks for all the positive comments. Brian, I would also never deliberately kill them as they pose no threat to my well-being. Besides, it would be very hypocritical of me to kill one after having benefitted from having photographed it.

Ishrani and Ian, thanks for your comments. Ian, they certainly are shiny and this sheen gives them that lovely wet look. Mind you, it does pose quite a challenge with diffusion and avoiding blown highlights.

I am afraid we will be faced with more of the conflicts like this with invasive species in the future with the combination of climate change, habitat loss and large scale human movement.

Lester, thanks. On the subject of invasive, I recently had a phone call from my son who informed me that his house is under siege from a Halequin ladybird infestation. No doubt they're probably looking for a nice warm place to hibernate. If he didn't live so far away I would be there at a shot with my micro lens. Anyway, it's no joke and I certainly don't envy his predicament as there are literally thousands in his room!
