So far I always put on the lightest lens on the body when transporting in a car or flying - so that if it gets tossed around I don't have a de-centered mount.

The lightest lens in my usual kit is my Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 but it is c/y mount and I am now convinced that the adapter (with A/F confirm) sometimes gets out of whack and drains the battery, in fact I blame it for a battery death.

Next in line would be the 17-40 but I don't always carry it and 40mm is a bit short to be useful for sudden opportunities. On the bright side it is weather-sealed so the camera might survive more fluid related incidents.

Another alternative is remove the battery when transporting but that's annoying since I don't know which particular bagging leads to longer transporting or storage.

What do you do? Am I overthinking?

My imagine composition sucks. I need a heavier lens.

there is always the camera body-cap they usually come with...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I don't think the weight of the lens matters as much as packing it well. If you have no other option than to put it in the cargo, then pack it well with soft things around it. When you take it in the car, use a camera bag and I think it will be fine.

Foam packing type hard cases are the most protective for travel. I use a Pelican 1630 transport case, my bodies never get packed for air travel with lens attached. To date no airlines has broken my cases, meaning never having damaged my equipment inside.
