I covered a new team this week as my regular HS team was off. CC is always welcomed.
Most all of these were ISO 10,000 /12,800, ss800, f3.2, 400mm

Nice work on these shots. Why is #7 showing more noise and even some orange fringing on the right side?

More then likely it is due to the distance of the shot and the area of the field. Their lights seemed to be hitting dead center of the field with the edges being the darkest. Thanks for the comments.

Thank you! I understand about the flash but MaxPreps won't except them unless you use a flash.

Could explain #7 then. Flash is lighting up crap in the sky at that distance.

Sure, if you want to shoot night football for MaxPreps then you have to use a flash. Their rules not mine. Besides, the crap you refer to won't show up in a print just as the noise won't be evident as well. The only thing that will show up is the actual grass or any other objects kicked up by the players. Hope that helps.

A good variety in your post, as you kept me scrolling down for the next image. I'm assuming that since you're a MaxPreps shooter, the images you posted were cropped according to the MaxPreps requirements? But since you're strobing, you should be able to drop your ISO much lower than 10,000...should you not? (I have NOT strobed a night game yet, so I am NOT speaking from personal experience! It is my understanding tho, that what I have stated in this post is good info.) Dang, gonna have to go out and strobe me a game now, since I've opened my big yap!

Yes all the images are cropped to their specs. As far as using the flash, I first learned from many on this forum to shoot at least two stops below ambient. That worked fine but there were issues. Sometimes you would get huge shadows or nuke the player coming towards you. Then another forum member shared how he was shooting ambient with ettl flash set at -2/3 to - 1 1/3 flash power. I gave it a try and really liked it better. Not only did I eliminated the shadows and reduced the nuke look. Also I can get 2 to 3 shots without having to wait for the flash to recharge. There is no right or wrong way, I just prefer shooting a higher ambient with flash. The print look good. No issues with noise at all. If you have any questions, shoot me a pm.

Do you use HSS? Camera will not sync at 1/800 shutter.
