to those who have used the former, is there any real-world difference in speed (given the same class/model used)? theoretically speaking, the microsd card would be slower.. but would it make any difference in a 6d?

Actually there have been reports of serious issues like corrupted files. At $1to $2 per GB just get a good quality Sandisk SD card, Extreme or Ultra.

My microSD + adapter wouldn't even work in my camera.

reason i'm inclined towards the microsd is because i'm only going to need huge amounts of storage for once-a-year travel. was thinking of using it for my smartphone after i come back from my trip.

really dunno what to say, i never used the micro sd just to check if he's working with 6d for 20-30 shots and yes it works but the buffer seems to write constantly so i put in a corner of my bag and here it lays since may :)

now i have :

2 x 32 gb sandisk extreme 45 mb/s ( awesome speed and preview )
1 x 32 gb samsung 30 mb/s ( good speed , not so good preview in burst mode , no errors so far )
1 x 16 gb kingston class 10 ( mediocre performance , good for single shots , very long time to preview 20 mpix raw )
1 x 32 gb micro sd sandisk 30 mb/s backup
1 x 32 gb micro sd emtec class 10 ( in my phone xperia z )

next year i'm planning upgrade to 90 mb/s since i have also one lexar card reader professional usb 3.0 and its damn fast even for sandisk extreme 45 :D

Then I would suggest you use an SD card in camera and transfer them to the microSD card for the smartphone. You won't need a very large micro card since you should probably downsize the images anyway for the smartphone. There is a sizeable group of people that have experienced issues using an adaptor, enough that I would caution it isn't worth the risk.
