Anyone use Pelican foam blocks *inside* of padded divider compartments?

I recently picked up a couple of Cheetah lights and am struggling to find the most space-efficient way to pack them in my Pelican 1564. If I lay them flat, I'm wasting a lot of height that the 1564 offers. I can angle the lights 90 degrees and lay them into a smaller divided section so basically the hotshoe and bulb cap are on the bottom and it comes up in a V shape, but I'm not a big fan of that either.

It dawned on me, why not arrange a single section in the 1564 that's large enough for both lights, and then stick a chunk of Pelican foam into that section so that I can insert both lights upright but bent 90 degrees? Seems like not only the most secure way to store them, but also the most space efficient.

Has anyone ever done this, use foam blocks *inside* of padded divider sections?

I haven't used the Pelican foam in that specific way, but I've done similar things with it. Foam blocks and spray adhesive provide endless possibilities. The only down side is that thin pieces of the foam distort pretty easily. I try to use pieces that are at least an inch thick between items.

Yeah, I started doing that with some randomly-sized light stands, clamps, etc. Doesn't look pretty and it's cumbersome to get stuff on the bottom of the compartment but I'm happy knowing everything is safe.

Great info, thanks. I went ahead and ordered some replacement Pelican PNP foam. I've thought of a few items that will be better packed in foam so my Pelican will be a hybrid of added dividers and foam sections. I think it will work great.

I don't use foam, but I use Tenba Messenger Wraps either around lenses and bodies or between them. I have one on the bottom of the case, and one goes over all the stuff right under the eggshell foam. NOTHING moves in that case.

You could also employ pieces of close cell foam (ground pad, used for camping and sleeping in sleeping bags on the ground) to separate the items in the section.
