Question concerning lav mics and recorders

Hello,

When miking the groom, I use the Sennheiser ME-2 lav mics with 1/8" jack with locking wheel into either a Roland R-05 or a Zoom H1. My concern is that the jack from the lav mic has to hit a sweet spot when plugged into one of these recorders. I think this is due to the locking wheel (being in the way?). And it has a tendency to come out of its sweet spot, especially ruffling around in the groom's jacket pocket. This happened at the last wedding ceremony I filmed, and unfortunately, the recorder ended up recording 15 minutes of nothing :( Luckily, we have back up audio to work with.

Has anyone experienced this, and if so, what are a few good solutions? I have a wireless lav system from Sennheiser that I could use, but a lot of the times I'm rushing around and usually end up resorting to the quickest solution: handy recorder with lav mic.

Thanks in advance.

And for anyone who is interested, here's a few videos we've been working on:

A couple of thoughts:
- On some of those connectors you can unscrew it up the connector to move it away from the connection.
- You can use some gaff tape to hold it in place on the recorder.
- You could make an adapter with one of THESE (external link) to a normal 3.5mm plug.

Thanks for the tips!

Unfortunately, there's no way to unscrew the locking mechanism away from the connection in these ME2 lav mics.

I like the idea of gaff tape! However, this opposes a challenge since the recorder only picks up the mic when it's not plugged in entirely. But I'll still give this a shot.

The adapter seems like the best option, but I'm a little unsure of how it works? Could you explain? I may stop in to Radio Shack to see if they can help with the situation.

We've been using ME2s with H1s with a right angle adapter (specifically http://www.radioshack.com …dex.jsp?productId=2103788 (external link)) and had not had any problems or need to give special consideration to them. If you look at the picture of it the plastic jacket doesn't go to the end so it leaves enough space for the locking screw. Also the right angle means the cable doesn't come right out the side of the H1 so it's a little less awkward in the pocket.

This is perfect!!! Thank you guys so much for all of your input. I will be making a stop at Radio Shack tomorrow.

Man, I love this forum :)
