Pixelated photos

Hello - perhaps you all can help me. I have a 40D camera, and sometimes when I get my photos uploaded to my computer, there are some photos that are pixelated. You can see it without zooming in at all. It's not every time I take pictures, but it seems to happen that my favorite picture from an outing is ruined because of this. Perhaps 1 or 2 out of 20 do this. I tried to save a picture from the RAW format to a jpeg to show you what it looks like, but it won't save. The DPP software says there's an error, and "decoding failed."

Is this an issue with the card in my camera? It is a SanDisk Ultra 8GB card. Or is this a camera issue?

Thanks for any thoughts!

Not sure what the issue is here, but I think that it would be worth trying a new(freshly FORMATTED IN CAMERA) card. It could also be your card reader or cable. Do the pics look pixelated when reviewed on the camera's LCD screen?

Are you using a card reader to download them?

No, just a cable that I plug into the camera and the computer. Do those go bad?

Yes they can. It would be worth it to me to try a new one. It could also be a bad USB terminal on either the camera or the computer. Try downloading to a different computer if a new cable doesn't help.

I'll try that. I didn't realize there could be so many different issues. I suppose the new cable would be the cheapest fix. I hope that's the problem.

Actually, what would be cheapest is to take your SD card from the camera and plug it directly into the computer.

See if you have the same problem.

40D, no SD. Even J.A. would have had to use the CF card.

That's because the corruption of the raw files (and that's what it sounds like) hasn't affected the embedded jpeg which is what the camera displays.

First thing to do is try another card. If that fixes the problem throw away the faulty card.

If the problems still exist with the new card then get a CF card reader and new USB cable.

If that doesn't fix it then it looks as if it's a fault with the camera :-(

Before you go spending money on new memory cards and hardware, can you post an example of one of your 'pixelated' images? Leave the EXIF intact..

All I have is a RAW file - not sure how/if I could show that. It won't save as a jpeg for me.

Hi Marilyn.
I posted an exact same thread last year. I had the same issues but when I looked at them on different computers they looked ok. I uploaded on here, but no one seemed to see what I was seeing. Upload them somewhere like Flickr and then view them on another PC.
Ian.
