I am looking at 3 lenses that are in budget for landscape and what ever else I can imagine up. Keep in mind I am using a 7D and I know a different lens may work so I am up for suggestions. I just prefer the faster lenses in case I need to use indoors etc.
Price also comes into play here.

The 4 I am looking at are:

  1. Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM FLD
  2. Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX
  3. Canon EF-S 17-55 F2.8 USM IS Used?
  4. Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8

A little more expensive but I suggest:

Canon 17-55 EF-S 2.8 IS

I have not yet been disappointed with this lens, it is mounted 95% of the time.

I would go with the Canon 17-55 as well. Best lens in the class by far.

But if you are still looking to save a little more cash, dont rule out the Sigma 17-50 2.8. Amazing lens for the price. I loved mine and miss it to this date.. I will find a 24-70 2.8 someday..

well in my opinion you can toss out number 4...

then it comes down to how wide do you want...i prefer to use an ultra wide angle for a lot of my landscapes...so i'd go for the 11-16mm, or one of the other 10-2Xmm lenses...

considering it doesn't look like you have anything wider than 50mm...maybe the 17mm end will be wide enough for you

I've got the Canon 10-22 for use with my 60D and love it!
I'm looking to buy a 17-55 for more of a walkaround/wide angle as well.

I vote for the 15-85 and 10-22. The only prime that interests me in that entire range is the 24L II. The Tokina at f/2.8 is only 2/3 stop faster than what you can get out of the Canon zooms. A difference of 2/3 stop is not going to make or break your photo.

Dedicated APS-c shooter. Gripped 60D, 60 2.8, 10-22, 15-85, Σ70-200 OS and a big white something or other! Plus a 5D w/28-75.

It depends on what you're shooting. Take astrophotography, where exposure time is often limited because of the movement of the subject. 2/3 stop means you can grab 1.6x as much light, which is quite significant.

True. I should have said that 2/3 stop is not going to make or break MY photos.

Well I'm leaning towards the Sigma 17-50 OS since I can get it pretty cheap with a Tiffen 77mm UV Wide Angle Filter 569.00 New.

The Canon will be at least 695.00 used with no warranty and I'm not 100% sure the Canon beats it in IQ bad enough to justify the extra 100-200.00 with no warranty and other possible issues of buying used.

You definitely missed out on a great deal for the Sigma 17-50 OS. It was on sale at Calumet last week for $469 with free 2 day shipping.

Don't exclude the Sigma 17-70 at http://www.sigmaphoto.com …m-f28-4-dc-macro-os-hsm-c (external link). You give up a bit of aperture but the lens has lens dock compatibility. Currenty shown at $499 on Sigma's site.

There are two camps on UV filters, I say ditch the UV filter for a Polarizer, far more benefical for landscape.
