6D vs. 5Dmk3 Colors

I'm not here to start any equipment war.

I've been browsing 6D Unite and 5Dmk3 Unite threads on this forum and I started to notice something rather unusual...

The pic and colors on the 6D Unite thread seems to look much better. Colors have more "warmth" to them and better "depth" to the composition....

Is it just me?

You seem to be confused. DXO rates the color depth of the 6D and 1DX at 23.8 bits. The rate the 5DIII higher at 24 bits. That is backwards from your observation.

From DXO's web-site, RE: color depth.
The higher the color sensitivity, the more color nuances that can be distinguished. As with dynamic range, color sensitivity is greatest when ISO speed is minimal, and falls rapidly with rising ISO settings. DxO Labs has focused on measuring only maximum color sensitivity.

A color sensitivity of 22bits is excellent, and differences below 1 bit are barely noticeable.

So Canon's latest bodies are all 2 bits above excellent. And they are only 0.2 bits apart when 1 bit is barely noticeable. You are making about way too much out of their ratings. The key thing to remember here is that DXO is talking about MAXIMUM sensor performance, under tightly CONTROLLED conditions with PERFECT light. Then they go on to completely define exactly NONE of these parameters.

What YOU get out of a camera depends on what YOU put into it. Composition, framing, lighting, exposure, lens choice and processing skills mean a lot more to your photographs than anything DXO can measure.

Give me adequate tools and I can do an adequate job. Give me perfect tools and I can still only do an adequate job. A better camera is never going to improve my photography. If Canon could get the shutter lag and ISO performance of a 60D in an SX50HS, I'd sell my DSLR stuff and never look back.

It's simply a matter of post processing and your imagination.

if you use the EF 70-200 f/2.8 II on the two bodies
i think you will go for the 5D3

Thank you. That is what most owners of both cameras say and googling reviews of both cameras point to the same conclusion.

I agree absolutely. If you browse the 6D United thread, they've got some pretty good pictures posted. I know that both the 6D and 5D mk3 produces almost the same quality pics so it must be the composition and post processing.

It could be a unique trait of owners of 6D. A particular segment of photographers? Those who pay more attention to the photo than the gear?

You are quoting color depth of Portrait alone which the 5Dmk3 scored the highest. For Landscape and Low ISO, both the 6D and 1DX scored higher.

Overall sensor score is 81 for the 5Dmk3 and 82 for both the 6D and 1DX.

If you asked me, I don't think my eyes can tell them apart, the difference of 1 DXO score which brings me to the theory that 6D Unite shooters are more photographer than equipment.

Regardless, DXO's overall sensor score still favours the 6D over the 5Dmk3.
