I have a bit of a rant/ramble on my gear situation and would love some opinions. My current gear is in my signature. I've been fairly stable with gear over the last 6-8 months. Since getting the Sigma 35mm it has become my most used lens. Also, I LOVE the images that come out of the 70-200 F2.8 is ii, however, since getting it a year ago I just do not use it enough to justify owning it, and even when I do use it, I do not like the size and weight of it. I honestly think it's size and weight is part of the reason I don't use it that often.

Since getting serious into photography, I have quickly realized that I have NO interest in doing events, weddings, family shoots, etc. I like doing my own creative thing. I also think there are times I leave my camera at home just because I don't feel like lugging it around. I am thinking about doing the following:

-Selling the 70-200
-Replacing it with the 135L AND a Fuji X100s

My logic for this: The 135L is smaller, faster, and will cover most of what I have been doing with the 70-200. I think I'll use it more as well. As for the Fuji, my logic is I LOVE the 35mm focal length, and I think I would take that camera with me everywhere when I didn't feel like lugging around the 5D3. Additionally, when I want to shoot on the 5D3 with the 135L, I could have a second camera with 35mm focal equivalent.

Crazy?

No.

I think the same.
I've sold lenses in the past because they're too heavy and/or bulky.
Even some of the so called "walkabout lenses" mean you end up with well over 1kg of stuff around your neck.
I know the benefits of better glass, better body, etc... But sometimes I don't even take my camera out with me because of the bulk... which sort-of defeats the object of having a decent camera.

I'm still in two minds about "downgrading" my 60D to the 100D... simply because of the weight/bulk.
Or even just say stuff-it-all and go back to the G12 I had a few years ago.

These are all reasons i want to go mirrorless... The New sony A7R offers something great for its price and weight. Also, you can mount EF lenses to it, what is a big plus..

Another inexpensive option for traveling lighter is to pick up a 40mm f/2.8 pancake for your 5D3. It is close to the 35mm focal length you like, and makes the 5D3 much lighter. I take the pancake with me whenever I travel to use as a light weight walkaround prime.

The 40mm pancake is something I hadn't even considered! Thanks for the suggestion, I know they are only like 200 bucks. Not as light and small as a Fuji, but way less money.

I also noticed the new Sony A7R and was interested. In general I just want to incorporate photography in my everyday life without having to dedicate an entire block of time with that purpose. I don't mind shooting with the 70-200 when I'm going out on the sole purpose of a photography walkabout....but that's not often enough! I'll use Disney World as a classic example. I have season passes, and go all the time. I never take my camera though as I get annoyed carrying it around all day (especially something like the 70-200). This is where I would love something like the Fuji X100s. I believe I would take that without hesitation.

Is this heresy?

My wife and I are fiercely competitive on the picture front. Holidays especially.

I use

EOS 5 D Mkii, 50mm F1.4, 24 - 105MM F4 430EX ii

She has an SX270.

I am feeling hard done by, as her shots (same views as me) appear as good (or better) than mine using all that kit.

She gets the shot in half the time (less) I know she does not have the 'creativity' options I have, but I am hard pushed to see a difference in run of the mill shots taken by both of us displayed on a monitor. I've had 35mm cameras since I was 20 and have always espoused the interchangeable lens form, that is until I saw how much compact cameras have improved.

Does anyone else feel like this? I know I may put the cat among the pigeons but the zoom on her compact put my 105mm to shame recently.

Me, nice white birds, her, yes Oystercatchers lovely orange beaks.

Yes, I know, camera shake, Bokeh, IS, filters, extra lenses external powerful flashguns, the list of extra creativity options is endless on mine. I just can't help feeling sore on general shots comparison.

I may post some his and hers examples if I can find any (when she is not waching!)
Rob.

On topic. I understand you. In fact, I feel exactly the same way! The size and weight of my current gear is killing me. And it has gotten a lot worse since I know I can get the same great image quality (perhaps even better) from a smaller mirrorless system

Off topic. Guess which camera I am switching to in December?

Actually, they're about 150$. However, if you use this deal (external link) for 50$ off any lens (see the slick deals link for full details) you can get it for 100$. I ordered one yesterday :D

Sounds like a good plan to be honest....is your 50/1.4 getting any usage?

You could also look at one prime telephoto just to keep that option alive...

Main reason I went with 6D first. I also had the 40mm when I first got my 6D and loved the size and weight combo the two made.

the 40mm isn't far off from 35 so if you like that you might want to give the pancake a try. I just rebought a 40mm yesterday off a guy here for 125 shipped.

I agree.
Recent holiday I used my 60D with a couple of lenses plus the usual bag of stuff on my shoulder.
My wife used her mobile phone or her Canon SX220.
Sometimes you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference between the three of them.

can you auto focus on Sony A7 with EF lenses using adaptor? If it can auto focus, I would like to get A7 for sure.

If Sony A7 can auto focus on EF lenses using adaptor, I bet you a lot of Canon and Nikon users will go with Sony A7.

No ; ( I do like the 50 focal range, but since the Siggy joined the clan, the 50 doesn't get touched.

Davio, since it sounds like you enjoy the 35 prime, sounds like you would enjoy another prime like the 135.

I'll through out another suggestion, since weight is a factor with the 70-2002.8 II, have you considered the much lighter excellent 70-200 F4 Lis
