Replacing Epson R1800 with a Canon Pixma Pro-100

My Epson has a clogged black nozzle. I have wasted enough ink at this point to realize that buying more ink would likely be more wasteful.

Seeing that B&H now offers a deal on the Canon Pixma Pro-100, I am thinking it would be a good buy.

I still might consider trying to unclog the Epson but I always had issues with prints being to dark. I have setup all the color profiles for my monitor, paper, printer, adobe cs, and still have not so good results 75% of the time. The other 25% is simply experimentation and getting lucky.

Is the Canon Pixma a fair upgrade or lateral move? Thanks!!

I have same problem with same printer and the pro-100 is the only 13 inch printer carried by any shop in my city so I that is my thinking also.

I too would expect good resistance to clogging from a Pro-100, being a dye-ink Canon.

The persistent dark prints, however, are probably due to your monitor being set too bright, calibration notwithstanding.

I used to think that but after using my i1Pro it still gave me unfavorable results. I did everything imaginable. Followed plenty of online tutorials for setting it all up and so on.

After reading many places it appears to be an issue with the printer itself in a lot of cases.

Well I decided that since I can get a printer and 100 sheets of paper for only a few bucks more than ink alone for my Epson I would bite the bullet and order the Canon. I will likely still unclog the Epson R1800 and keep it. I also have an Epson R200 which is still running strong.

First print out of the printer and I am blown away...it matches my screen. Finally, success.

Not sure about Canon, but most printers are shipped with partially filled carts. The Epson's do come with regular, full carts. When I bought my 3880 for just under a grand it came with a full set of carts worth just over 500 bucks, then quickly changed over to Cone inks as the carts,went empty. Go to the Red River Paper web site and look at the charts on the true costs of printing, some printers are much cheaper to operate, larger carts equal less expensive ink.

Did it yesterday, local store had it for 200 bucks off. Goodbye R1800. Carts were as full as could be.

I saved $300 on the printer.

Canon is giving a hundred dollar prepaid card on that printer. No deal with Canon and local store so I lose out on card, bummer.

It must be that time of year, my 1800 also bit the dust. 2 sets of inks and it was just starting to unclog when I got the pop up

I replaced it with the R2000 and had some problems with a pop up telling me the printer is not compatible with this version of PS ! ?. I ignored it and was very pleased with the prints.

I've had a PRO100 for about 3 months now. I bought mine with 50 sheets of Canon's 13x19 Lustre paper for $100 after the $300 rebate (arrived on a card in about 2 weeks). So, depending on how you look at it, I bought the printer for $100 and got free paper in the deal or I bought $100 worth of paper and got the printer for free.

My first print was also right on. Now, after a few weeks, I am very pleased with this printer. I also recommend Red River. Their Polar Arctic Satin is my basic paper. I also use several Canson papers, Canon Lustre or Glossy papers (but not the semi-gloss-it has a veiled look to me), and Ilford Smooth Gloss.

This printer is a great buy. The independent paper companies are releasing profiles for it which is unusual for a dye printer. I guess that's evidence of the respect it's getting from the industry.

Though bigger tanks save money, most have a hard time shelling out $80 or more for a single cartridge.

Moreover, some printers may get nasty about cartridge expiration dates.

I've had several Canon printers. None, including the PRO 100, came with "starter" carts. They were all full and I have never had one "age out". They are all too small and cost too much but that's universal, I think.
