For everyone that is considering to buy the new Sony a7 camera (external link) - you may want to wait a little bit since Nikon is rumored to announce a new full frame hybrid camera (external link) with the following specifications:

  • Nikon FM2 like design
  • 16,2MP 36x23,9 full frame sensor (same as in the D4?)
  • SD memory card
  • 2016-pixel RGB image sensor
  • 9-cell framing grid display
  • 3D color matrix metering II
  • Native ISO range: 100-12800 (incl. ISO 50 and ISO 108,200)
  • 5.5 fps for up to 100 shots
  • 3.2" LCD screen
  • Battery:EN-EL14
  • Dimensions: 143,5 x 110 x 66,5mm
  • Weight: 765g
  • It will come with a new AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G lens (again, not clear what mount the new lens will have)

If it turns out to be true, Sony would definitely not have the upper hand because Nikon just does a better job at understanding photography.

Nikon knows people don't want to USB charge their batteries IN camera and have to purchase an external charger separately. Nikon knows that people want fast primes, not f2.8 primes or $1000 55mm 1.8s, or 24-70 f4s for $1200.

Canon would be in a world of hurt because they would be WAAAAAY behind in the mirrorless game and would find out (WILL find out) that the mirrorless market is NOT a niche market anymore. Canon has been acting like Blackberry did when the iPhone first came out. They won't go the way of BB, but they are in for a harsh lesson LOL!

This is a near-full-size camera, not a competitor for the A7r.

Also, with only 16MP, I wouldn't be interested...

Regarding lenses, a lot of interest in the A7r is in the fact that almost any lens - Canon, Nikon, whatever - can be attached to it, due to its short flange distance. This is not the case with the Nikon mount.

I don't really see the point in this - they already have the D800 and D610, and this one has a lower resolution and ISO capability, doesn't shoot any faster, uses the same lenses and isn't much smaller. And the D4 sensor is also demonstrably inferior to the Exmor-based sensors... Maybe they have a surplus of D4 sensors to get rid of.

^^This^^ What makes the Sony so attractive is that I can use my current Canon lenses. This makes switching body types a whole lot easier.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

As I said in another post, I need to confirm if the EF adapter will work well with Canon's 17 TS-E and 24 TS-E II. Will it vignette at full shift? The EF adapter could increase the gap between the lens and sensor.

Its also not in a modern shell. I don't think this camera is there to compete with anything else, but will be more of a premium enthusiast camera. I didn't see a price, but that should explain a lot.

Sony's marketing department will be pleased to see how much uncritical comment and general headless chicken behaviour the new camera announcements have generated ;-)a

The retro look definitely attracts a certain group of photographers just like what Fujifilm had created with their recent X series cameras.

Retro look, semi-compact design, D4 sensor, and the ability to use existing F mount lenses is huge IMO. There is certainly a market where Nikon is leaning towards. New news is better than no news at all. ;)

And Canon is the king of no news at all.

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

I have no interest in what it looks like, if they were to stuff good stuff into something that looks like a dog turd I'd carry it around and use it. I don't know what this has to offer that I need, just hoping whatever mount they came up with will take existing lenses.

Here, it has the D800E sensor. Enjoy.
