Are there any available shutter releases, wireless or otherwise, that will work with the SX40 HS? Not having much luck finding anything that is not for a DSLR.

It looks like the easiest solution (since I don't like building electronics) is the Ricoh CA-1. The video was helpful but I can't tell if I can get half a shutter push and a full shutter push with the emergency charger. Sometimes the cam will focus on an unitended subject and I will need to release the half push without taking the photo to reframe my shot. I am not sure the emergency charger will allow this.

It looks like the emergency charger will work provided options are set up properly in CHDK. Very helpful, thanks.

Exactly what I was looking for. CHDK provides quite a few features to my SX40 that makes it perform much more like a DSLR.
