Hi,

I'm planning on an upgrade in the near future from my 550D to a 7D and have started to build a cart on the B&H site with accessories I will need. On my 550D I'm currently using a wired shutter release but would like to go wireless with the 7D and the various Vello brand devices have caught my eye. It looks like they all attach to the top of the camera via the hot shoe, and then plug from there into the 3 pin remote plug on the side of the camera, then you would hold the wireless remote in your hand to snap the shutter. I also use my Yongnuo 468TTL flash wireless on my current camera, which has the transmitter attached to the camera's hot shoe. So would this mean that I will not be able to use both the flash and the wireless remote at the same time together?

I *think* that it is hotshoe mount solely for convenience.

Uh huh - as in it plugs into the remote input on the camera's side but oh-so-conveniently can plop on top if you want? So if that is the case, then I assume I could just strap it instead onto my tripod head (which I would only use the remote when tripodding anyways) and that would be that?

I slap some self-adhesive Velcro hook fabric on my wireless receivers and use double-sided Velcro cable ties to whatever's convenient (strap, tripod, . . . ) to anchor them. The shoe mount (not a "hot shoe", since it doesn't have any electrical contacts) is strictly for convenience.

I have Phottix Stratus II remote flash trigger set. The receiver can be mounted on the camera and used as a wireless remote release. And the hot shoe is a pass through so I think you could put your flash on top of the mounted receiver. So for the price of one device (under $100), you get both a wireless remote flash trigger and a wireless remote camera release and your hot shoe is not disabled.
