I'm selling my 50d and L glass but since it is my only camera I am looking for something to take really nice pics with. Just looking for a top quality walk around, family gathering, pics around the lake type camera. Is there any advantage other than the long telephoto that I really won't be needing. Do both have IS? Any other improvements with the 50 over the 40 besides the zoom? Any disadvantages with either over the other? Don't know much about other makers models...any suggestions?

I know that is a lot of questions but could really use the help.

ps: selling the good stuff because I just tired of photography and don't need a lot of expensive stuff just lying around getting more and more dated and worth less and less.

I chose the 40 over the 50 recently due to the 80 dollar price delta at the time. 50 has extra zoom as noted and can shoot in RAW (as can the 40 but you need the CHDK program installed). I shoot a bunch at home and do closeup work and for me the Canon line really excels there. No reason for me to opt for the 50 but your mileage may vary ;) .

I have had the sx40 and now have the sx50, apart from the longer zoom, the autofocus is noticeably faster, and there are a couple more scene modes, hdr etc. the autofocus is the real big difference that I noticed, although the sx40 is still a great camera with excellent IQ.

Hi Mike,

I had a Canon T1i and I sold it for the SX 50 and I take a LOT more pictures now than when I had to lug all the equipment around. It got me excited about photography again.
