It looks like canon submitted a patent about 3 months ago for the lens. Does anyone know how long it is going to take to get to the marketplace?
Thanks,
mike

Gripped 60D, 60 2.8, 10-22, 15-85, Σ70-200 OS and a big white something or other! Plus a 5D w/28-75.

Very best, What if you need more DOF and have to stop down? Kel

Oct 23, 2013 14:20 | #6 it seems the people buying the 35mm with is are pretty happy with it, used for video, shooting at 1/15 of a sec, etc, if possible it would seem it or something else would go into production due to alot of people unhappy with the canon 50mm 1.4, also they are refreshing their lines with image stabilization. The 50 is as sharp overall vs the sigma 50, but bokeh on the sigma is better and people have reliability issues with the canon version. mike parker

A fast 50 with IS and STM would be a great "normal" lens for FF video, for those who crave the shallow DoF that is a hallmark of DSLR video.

The existing 1.8 is the cheap and cheerful option and is fine as a baseline- but the shorty forty has rendered it almost redundant. The 1.4 is unusably soft until f2.0 anyway. On top of that the focusing mechanism is not true-USM and is woefully pone to failure. Additionally, it's not an accurate focuser in low light, or mixed light. The 1.2 is beautiful in terms of color, contrast, and bokeh, but is soft wide open, and suffers from focus shift when stopped down. I would kill for a Canon 50 that is sharp wide open (which all the new IS primes are), focuses very accurately (which all the new IS primes do), and was of a robust build (again, check). The IS is just a great bonus in that I can now shoot primes for handheld video (awesome) and can stop down for non-moving targets in low light. I cannot wait to give Canon my money for this and I'm not alone.

Not everyone. I've had mine 3-1/2 years and no issues. How about the Sigma's focus issues? Both are blown out of proportion. Kel

I would buy it, provided it is up to snuff optically. In other words, if it is the 50mm f/1.8 equivalent of the 35mm f/2 IS USM lens, I'll fork over $650. It's not like the EF mount is spoiled for choices in modern, auto-focus 50mm lenses.
