I hope this is the correct place for this. I already searched here and googled everything to no avail, but anyways, I just bought this boom arm and grip head. (I know..cowboy studio :o) http://www.amazon.com …o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (external link)

I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO USE IT. I'm really hoping I'm doing something completely wrong here, because if not, I just bought the sketchiest boom on the market. Can anyone give any insight on how to properly attach the grip head to the stand? I read the reviews on amazon and it seemed like this combo would get the job done, but now I'm totally regretting this buy.

Typically, those Grip Heads are made for much "beefier" stands..... And they actually mount on the "riser" instead of the stud. So raise your first riser (if not big enough, then raise your second riser) about 6-8 inches, then as stated before mount the boom and Grip Head until it's nice and tight..... You can now rotate into position!

::EXAMPLE::

I mounted mine like that the first time... (kinda hard to see because of the tree in the BG)

but after I took the pic, I realized while putting everything away that I had slightly pinched the stand and it now catches just a bit when dropping it down all the way. Then I realized I was doing it all wrong, and my grip head (external link) was designed to mount to the stud :doh:

^^looks like I'm gonna have to buy that. I just don't trust an AB800 with anything larger than the 7" reflector on this setup. Especially with solely relying on the grip head to attach to the riser and nothing else.

i don't get it...

Even the amazon photos have the proper mounting method for your combo:

I think you're over thinking things and having a brainfart, but it doesn't look good for your foray into lighting if you're already stumped.

I saw the sample images... It didn't seem right to mount it in the middle of the pole. And not to be a dick, but I'm well into my "foray into lighting."

I bought an Impact boom (as part of a kit) and the clamp for the boom was the same...Don't worry though, the very poorly made handle on the clamp will break soon enough, rendering it fairly useless. I ended up getting a Promaster boom (not a fan of the over-priced brand) and it was much more sturdy and holds an Einstein unit with softbox fairly well.

Nice shots also BTW.

I bought the same stand at a garage sale for $10, and used it for the first time last night. long story short, I will probably be using something else soon.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm gonna try it out with mounting on the riser. If it feels too sketchy then I'll probably just go with an avenger head.

In that case, i strongly recommend a d600 boom with some counterweights if you don't already have them.

Booms handle alot more stress and are generally holding things above other things, its not a piece of equipment i would be cheap about when your charging.

Still not sure why you couldn't figure it out, but maybe you did and were just finding it sketchy, at which point for 40$ what did you expect lol?
