Challenge #4 - Sweet Tooth

We all get them every once in a while. Whether its just a craving or a need for a little pick-me-up because we've had a bad day at work.

You all know what I'm talking about...all those desserts and candies that the doctors and denists beg you to stay away from. Well, post away guys because I promise I won't tell anyone about your mishap with the cookie jar. :lol:

Again post anything that gives you a sweet tooth...Cakes, Pies, Candies, Sodas or your favorite ice cream shop that you and that special someone like to visit on Friday nights before you go to the movies. Be creative, I think this challenge should yield many fun results, and good luck to everyone!

That does it for Powershot Challenge #4, and though it took a while to launch off, I believe it turned out to be another fine contest and looks like many of you had lots of fun with it, and maybe even put on a few extra pounds.

===============

*Winners*

1st Place - S_Bradley

Its hard to believe this was done with a P&S, just another fine example of a photograph taken without all the "needed" essentials to make it happen. I'm not even going to ask how long it took to get to the final result, but your hard work paid off for sure. This picture has so much detail in it and I don't think there is anything notably wrong with it. Congrats Simon with a big pat on the back.

2nd Place - snowrdr

Sure any common man can set aside a glass of milk and a plate of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, but it takes a photographer to make them look good. The shadows and lighting are what made this picture, they are superb. Congrats to you snowrdr!

3rd Place - nwyman

First I want to congratulate you for making the running with another good picture. However, there are few things which could've sparked a second place spot I thought you should know about.

[COLOR=black]First the plate of doughnuts seem a bit soft or OOF. Secondly, the doughnut on top is a bit distracting with all that icing, had you flipped it around the like the rest it would've made it a lot better. The strawberry with the greenish yellow tip on the bottom needs to go as well and a black background would've helped to bring out those beautiful reds and helped make the doughnuts appear much more appetizing. COLOR]

I don't want you to feel that I'm singling you out here, because those aren't my attentions because you did a fine job with you picture, though a few things I noticed that needed adjusting.

===============

There we're also a few other entries that I'd like to discuss that had potential, but lacked pizazz.

Action Man - You we're the first to enter the contest. Your picture was decent, however it lacked what I needed as a judge. It kept me guessing a bit, and lacked the appeal I needed for a "sweet tooth". It also seemed a bit out of focus and I found the purple fringing to be a bit distracting, don't get discouraged though keep on shooting!

Formulated_One - I like the background and your Reese's stood out well. They're sharp an have plenty of detail however this wasn't what your picture lacked, It lacked composition. Having a 3-D pyramid would've been much better; I would've also included the bag in there somewhere too with some of the leftovers pouring out of it.

Supergoat - I think you had a good idea going here, however lacking cultural background made the man stand out as a distracting irrelevant prop. Placing a Spanish dish alongside with some Jarritos soda and a Mexican cuisine cookbook may have been just what it needed to make the running.

===============

Congratulations again to the winners you guys did outstanding, and I'm glad everyone is pitching in to make these Contests possible. I can't wait to see what Simon has in store for us in the fifth competition, and thanks again for having me as your judge!

Thanks for the critique!
I do appreciate it, because, frankly, I don't know what the heck I am doing most of the time.
As for the "softness" of the shot - I noticed that as well, after I had posted it. It looked better when smaller.

Is it better to post as close to the 100K limit, or can one step back a bit? AIR, mine was around 96K, and I think it might have looked better somewhere around 80 or so.

I was kind of rushed when I took the pictures - would like to have had time to play around with manual settings, etc., but grandchildren were due to arrive and I needed to get a move on while I still had donuts to hand. (they don't last long, do they?).

I liked the white background - but that's a personal preference, I guess. <g>.

No doughuts surely do not last long around children, myself included. Speaking about the OOF I also noticed your last entry had the same problem, and I think your shutter speeds may be the culprit.

If your handholding these shots, especially indoors where low lighting can take a big effect on focusing you need to be using the proper shutter speeds and if your still using ISO 50 or 100, this may be why your having these problems.

What you could do in indoors or a low light situation is to shoot in Av priority and let the camera do the deciding for you to obtain the proper exporsure and shoot on a tripod if you still want to use ISO 50. Otherwise your only other options are to either shoot wide open with an aperture of f2.7, or to up your ISO to 200 or 400 and use a bit of fill flash 1/3 full power or 2/3's if your not taking a portrait or anything close up.

When I shoot indoors at my house at night time I usually find myself using ISO 400, with a bit of fill flash and manual mode to adjust the shutter speeds to 1/60 or 1/80 so that I can handhold them and a aperture of 2.8 - 3.5 to get proper exposure. Your house could have much better lighting than mine, but I'd rightfully assume that you'll probably need to be using nothing less than ISO 200 to obtain proper expousures most of the time, and using flash is almost a gareentee indoors since we don't have the option of high ISO settings that are made famous by the SLR users.

I'm glad I could help a bit though, I'm just a beginner too, so perhaps S_Bradley or snowrdr can add some of their thoughts as it appears they've been doing this a while. :lol:

thanks Chad. I don't shoot much indoors, probably because I'm usually unhappy with the results. I'll take your suggestions to heart and see what happens in the future.
And I ordered a tripod this morning. <g>
