In a noisy crowded room probably not, but in a quiet room you can hear it...more so you can feel it as it doesn't zoom fluidly like the 70-200 does. Focus ring feels like it should but the zoom ring definitely has something wrong with it.

Hopefully, the've sold quite a few since yours and it comes from a different batch. Are they aware of this issue? Hey, that one will probably hit the refurb market now.

Hey ya never know...the Canon customer service person that replied to me said the lens they have there to test does not make the noise with the focus or zoom rings and advised me to make sure the lock switch was completely unlocked. Which of course I did several times last night before getting frustrated and packaging it all back up in anticipation of sending it back.

Here's a link to a video of the clicking/ticking sound. Fortunately, I don't have the problem and my date code is "032."

Yup, that was the same as mine...mine was also "032"...and it's on it's way back now. Hopefully they can turn this around quick.

You'll find it on the box. It's the first 3 digits of the serial number I believe.

Here's how to determine Canon's date code using the serial #.

Some are still getting the 2012 build, too, as they return them because of the clicking noise, however, I'm sure the 2012 stock is dwindling. Besides, this tells the exact month, which helps isolate the affected units.

Yes, but it's all we have to work with for now. Also, those 1st 3 numbers have been pretty consistent.

Good news...I got my replacement today with an 042 and surprise, no noise! I suspect we've been blowing through the 032 bad batch so fast that we've finally moved on to a new batch...hopefully none of these suffer the same fate! Rebate is on it's way!

Cool. My rebate has been approved also. I'm anxious to use this for basketball season - football is not quite over yet.

I was recently on a federal jury. Trial lasted 4 days and I got $420. Then I looked up my bonus bucks on one of my credit cards and it was over $600. Told them to send me a check. Next I ordered a NEC MultiSync PA271W-BK-SV which was covered by the above and no cash out of pocket. But that's how we deceive ourselves. In reality I still spent $1007 bucks for the monitor with MY MONEY even though I didn't have to take it out of my checking or savings.
