My daughter just got a Canon 100D. She bought this as an upgrade for shooting pictures for wedding receptions. Her old camera's flash was weak and I know that a new add-on flash would help her take the best pictures. I have no clue what to get....without breaking the bank. Would a Speedlite 270EX be adequate? Any suggestions?

The most bang for the buck is, I believe the 550EX. My second choice would be a 580EX II. The 270 just doesn't have the power for using diffusers, umbrellas, reflectors or for bounce flash. I don't think the 270's head swivels either. It is basically a really powerful on-camera flash.

Dedicated APS-c shooter. Gripped 60D, 60 2.8, 10-22, 15-85, Σ70-200 OS and a big white something or other! Plus a 5D w/28-75.

If she doesn't mind setting flash power manually this is a great flash and is selling for 70 bucks on Amazon right now.

This.

I wouldn't trust TTL for wedding shots anyway.

If she's pretty new to flash photography, I would suggest go for the automatic flash (E-TTL). YongNuo YN-468 II E-TTL Speedlite for Canon is a very good flash (about $80 on eBay or Amazon)

I was new to flash (still am) and bought a YN-560III and had no problem learning the basics. It seems pretty straight forward to me... no more complicated than doing manual exposure adjustments.

Just picked up two of the Yongnuo 560III and a couple of stands, adapters and umbrellas for a couple hundred dollars. Plus when you use the Yongnuo rf603 trigger, the flash has a built in receiver.

This.

I wouldn't trust TTL for wedding shots anyway.

And why not? ETTL is best used for moving subjects like a reception. If shooting static stuff like in a studio, manual is the way.

There are a lot of great Yongnuo flashes out there. I would suggest getting one with ETTL so she can learn both ETTL and manual shooting.

Head over to the flash section of the forums and have a look.

The 4 series of Yongnuo is good, but old. I would stick to the 5 series like the 565.

Thanks all. I am going with the YongNuo YN-468 II E-TTL because of the views I have read. Hope it's a good choice....

Along similar lines, I bought a YN-565 and have been very happy with it. Very powerful and well built.

The instruction manual is a bit brutal and no HSS (although the YN-568 has it now) but a VERY capable flash unit.

As above, combine it with some radio triggers and it really adds to your camera's capability.

The 565 sells for just over $100 on ebay right now. Steal of a deal IMHO.

I'm sure my daughter knows, but what is a radio trigger?

A device used to fire the flash wirelessly when it's not sitting on the camera's hot shoe.

Yongnuo 622C radio triggers are a good, cost-effective, option.

I have the 565 and 568ex II.

The 568ex II has some issues, so get the mark I version.

The II can be used as an optical commander, but the battery door breaks and it has a weird thing for bounce flashes.
