I'm not much of a portrait guy, but the light looks pretty harsh on the subject. Were there any shaded areas? The shadows over his eyes make him look somewhat scary. Also, the crop looks pretty tight.

I made those mistakes when I started. Keep sun off and for all the orange pumpkins take photos when the sun goes down. Even in shade you will get a orange cast of the reflection off the pumpkins.

I don't feel the crop is bad. I'm not a fan of the harsh light = dark eyes look. I have alot of shots like this early on until I really buckled down and wanted to improve. It's a good photo but main thing to look out for is the eyes. Bright eyes means everything! Yes you can do it without flash like my sample below. I took this on an overcasted day but the results are better then in 1pm-4pm sunlight.
