I have the Canon 70-200IS 2.8 (Version I) & am thinking of getting a converter or extension tube but to be honest I'm not really sure what the difference is between the two; I'm looking for something to increase my reach for those venues/churches that won't let us get as close as we'd like to the couple. Any advice, experience, thoughts appreciated!

Yes I use the 1.4x extender with my 70-200 on a crop and on a full frame at every single wedding. It gets me shots which have a different dimension.

Do you use a Canon extender or another brand? Thanks for the reply!

I've used them in the past. The 1.4x Tele Converter will still give you good IQ at 280mm f/4 and also good AF. Kenko ones are cheaper and just as good but the Canon one is built tons better and is weather sealed if that matters.

Extension tubes on the other hand decreases minimal focus distance allowing you to use your lenses as a make-shift macro lens.

Just make sure it was a MKII or better because IIRC, the MKII was a big improvement over the MKI.

Have not need to reach more than 200 mm for wedding but I always have a crop sensor in my bag + a 2X Kenko.

I use tubes to make my 24-70 into a macro. Cheaper than a full macro lens, which I use for about 3 photos per wedding day. Not quite as nice to use but good enough. I find the medium tube enough, I don't use small or large. I can find lengths for you if you like.

OP is looking for increased reach on her 70-200 so what she needs is a teleconverter not an extension tube.

As an aside-what tube would you recommend for converting a (canon) 50mm or 70-200 to a macro ?
