Good game, a 2-1 shootout win. I shot with the 300 at the top for the first period, then went down to ice level for the rest of the game. I know some people wanted to see some shots from ice level as I commented on the differences in quality from the ice to shooting over glass. I also took the suggestions from posters in the other threads and toned the whites down slightly.

The over the glass shots used the following: 1Dx + 300 2.8 MK2 - 1/1000, 3.2, 2000 ISO
Ice level shots used the following: 1Dx + 70-200 2.8 MK2 - 1/1000, 3.2, 3200 ISO

As you can see in the ice-level shots, they just don't have as much "pop" as the over the glass shots, but I am still content with the results.

I should have pictures from Sunday's game, with the Stanley Cup as the special guest, soon.

C&C is always welcomed and appreciated.
Thanks for looking!

Good set! I agree that shooting through the glass takes some of the "pop" out of the images. I think the glass reduces contrast from the images and I find I often have to really increase the blacks. I prefer the ice level shots myself, but I really like the variety you get from shooting both locations. The higher angle really provides a better look at shots on net. Looking forward to seeing more as the season continues.

Great set!

I agree with John's comments above - bringing the blacks down should bring some pop back for those shot through the glass.

Also in the last image there seems to be slight fringing on the puck and blade of the stick, probably another byproduct of the glass.

Thanks guys.

I dropped the blacks quite a bit, along with the shadows in Camera Raw, but still couldn't get them to jump. Even brought an image into Photoshop and applied a duplicate layer of soft light with a 10% opacity to get more contrast, and still can't get em to look like shooting over the glass. You can see in 3 & 4 on the far left side of the image, some whiter area, and that's scratches/rubbing on the glass.

Also, yes on 6 that is from the glass as well.

Since we had some renovations on the arena this offseason, we now have another spot to shoot from, so I am going to try that for Thursday's game and see if the glass is any better there. It's also on the end where we shoot twice, so more shots of the home team!

Thanks for the C&C guys. Still early in the season, so lots of room for improvement!

ive seen glass take out up to 2 full stops depending on the rink's lighting, age/condition of glass and its composition as well...

one of the rivals of my local Tier II Jr team just installed new used glass they bought from the Minnesota Wild a couple of years ago. it is so much nicer than what they used to have...

my barn has old old lexan that is pretty well marked up so i find myself contorting myself behind the nets trying to avoid the black marks or other scuffs...

i really like your work. i just cant figure out why everyone elses work is so much better than mine, no matter what i try. it cant ALL be in the post processing because these shots obviously started out pretty close to 'right'...

Drew LeBlanc? Sure do, I'll make sure to upload more of him in my next few posts and will make sure to get shots of him in the next few games. I can also send you a PM with some more photos if you'd like. He's a great player with a bright future.

Thanks for the compliment. I wouldn't be so hard on yourself, your work is very good. The lighting in here has improved the quality of my shots, but it's also a good arena to shoot, so that helps. It's really a combination of many things.

Great series and good to see someone else covering a Carolina team.

Really unfortunate they don't have any holes in the glass for you guys in the corners, makes it so much easier and your image quality would improve so much. Still though, definitely made the best of what you had.

Thanks Drew. Charlotte is coming back here in a few days, so I'll be covering them again. You can check back in a week for shots from that game.

And yeah, I wish we had holes to shoot from, too. At least over the glass I get better quality, but you can't get the same shots as down below.

my barn is city owned and i semi-dated the Mayor Pro-Tem (THIRTY YEARS AGO!) in high school and her son plays D for the team...

i asked HER about getting photo ports cut and she seemed awfully interested in getting it done, but i told her to forget it because on the corners is where the handicap seating is for these games and the rink is used for every manner of peewee/midget/bantam etc. i can just see some kid sticking their hand through there during one of their games and getting fingers smashed...
