With a 40mm lens you could have lowered your shutter speed to 1/60 of a second and lightened the backround and also the depth of the shadow areas without changing anything else. Without varying the aperture and flashpower you can change the background by adjusting the shutter speed.

in other words: the apparent light from the flash stays the same when you change shutter speed, but the apparent light from ambient will change.

shots look good. i think you can see now that head shots, even 3/4 shots often don't require the best locations. once you go full body that's when you need to worry more about the background.

At least six 1000W strobes with softboxes connected via pocket wizards on HSS.... at a minimum.

So if I lower the shutter speed will it cause motion blur if there moving? I used my camera max shutter speed with flash but didn't think about going lower.

You can also use a reflector.

Yeah didn't think about that and I brought it with me. Just so much to remember when it's actually a shot. I will try again this weekend.

Not if the subject isnt moving. If you have a crop body then your minimum handheld 1/focal length x 1.6 In this case roughly 1/60. So you have almost two stops of ambient you can regain via shutter speed, more if you were using a tripod or a lens with IS.
